Opteron in a Gaming rig.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm in a pickle. I happen to notice alot of people using Opteron Server processors, and some of them look like gamers. Anyway, I just upgraded to 939 stuff and I'm looking to go Dual Core pretty soon, and I like the fact that the Opty 165 has 2MB of L2 Cache, while the X2 3800+ has 1MB L2. I need to know what you guys think, Athlon X2 or Opteron for a budget gamer. Oh, before I forget, no one try to attempt to talk me into a socket 940 board, or AM2, I have negative feelings for both due to the fact that AM2's speed is slightly dictated by RAM products, unless they're suited for the board, it'll slow down everything, and 940 never took off, and I just got 939 stuff. Ive heard a few people say that the Athlon 64 X2 has a better architecture, but where's the proof? Thanks in advance for the responses.

athlon 64 + opteron = EXACT SAME THING!

ahahaa. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's the truth. the 939 opterons are just athlons with a different name.

Good luck.

well its really 2x512 for the x2 3800+ heh. but heres the plan, im sticking with my 3700+ until christmas and prices will drop once quad core show up =) but yes opterons are good at games too. they're made for computers that stay on 24/7 so of course they're good. but if you dont have a budget, get the opty.

Mine runs great!.

But MEM+GPU+PSU are more important factors of a gaming rig.

actually arent they made with better stuff - like the FX series memory controller or something, or so everyone says.

opty 165's are great, they overclock like crazy if you get a great stepping

BUT

if possible, go conroe - the performance gap is quite large

Thanks man, I'll go with Opteron then, they're more stable and bring more L2 than the equivalent X2. Oh, and I'll never go Intel again, AMD has more interest in making games look good, instead of pure number crunching, that's what Intel's problem seems to be, to much time focused on speed, and not on quality.
