[Will Fix] Logging in mid-thread brings you to the top of the thread.

Reproducibility: Were you able to reproduce this problem consistently?

Browser, active browser addons, and operating system

Reproducibility:

Yes; all browsers (at stock), consistently.

 

Repro Steps:

Browse any thread and select a post (so the URL becomes http://www.overclock.net/t/xxxxxx/thread-title-here/0_100#post_xxxxxxx) while logged out. Log in, and you will be sent to the top of the thread (URL: http://www.overclock.net/t/xxxxxxx/thread-title-here/0_100).

 

Expected:

The that thread would redirect me to the post I was viewing, not the thread.

Confirmed.

When selecting a specific post in a thread and then logging in will take you to the OP and not the previously selected post.

The issue here is that we don't store any kind of context data for logged out users. When you log in, there isn't any trail to redirect you back to. This is more of a feature request than a bug since it's expected behavior.

I filed it as #8516 but I'm not sure this can/will be changed in the near future.

I don't see why not? It's a URL; why not just redirect back to the URL you were on when you logged in?

The browser doesn't send the fragment (the #post_12354 bit) to the server; that is a client side only action. We send you to whatever URL the browser asked for, which ends at 0_100 in this case. it's possible to work around this in javascript and so on, but we all know how popular adding more scripting is. redface.gif
