[Will Fix] Usernames beginning with certain characters not showing up in search results

Thread Starter

Reproducibility:

Yes, all the time, all browsers.

Repro Steps:

I tried checked three sections to confirm this bug. In both cases, I was searching for the user "$ilent" (and I hope he doesn't mind me naming him :)):

1) When composing a PM, if you begin typing into the "TO" field, it autocompletes names for you (so if you entered "zoda", you would see my name, and two others). However, at no stage when I was typing out "$ilent" was I suggested his name.

2) When searching for users (search bar at the top of any page, then going to "User" tab), searching for "$", "$i" up to "$ilen" gave no result in the "User" tab. Only when I fully typed in "$ilent" did I get a match (note, for the PM bug above, even typing in the full name gave no suggestion).

3) His profile URL doesn't include the symbol:

http://www.overclock.net/u/111903/ilent

Expected:

I expected the search results to act the same as if I was entering any other username.

Notes:

Since we no longer have a "member's list" as we did on vB, I don't have a list of usernames with uncommon symbols to create a list. All I can confirm is the $ is one of them.

Windows 7 x64 Professional

IE9 x32

Confirmed.

Google Chrome

IE9

FireFox

Windows 7 SPI

I have had this issue before, even in our control panels. The system does not like some characters or special symbols. In fact I was trying to add H3||scr3am to something earlier and the system simply would not find him unless I only tried searching the second half of his name ''Scr3am''. Only then could I find him on a drop down list. I do not think its anything to do with the double pipes ''||'' because when I searched with them before it worked, in any case it is not working as it should with special characters.

Infact I had this issue adding user +Blade+ once due to the fact the ''+'' use to be Crucifix style crosses but the system converted them to ''+'' but even when searching for him using the converted ''+'' I still could not locate him using the search feature.

Autocomplete in PMs on names with special characters is an existing bug, #7400. Filed the remainder of these issues with the special character as #8519. Thanks for the detailed report.
