Limit Cores for 24/7 Folding on SR-2 Even or Odd #?

Thread Starter
Is it better to limit the mumber of cores with an even or odd number? or does it not matter?

I am running 2. GPU clients on my system with no issues.

Currently I am running the CPU -smp 19 on my dual Xeon SR-2.

2 main reasons for limiting the cores is the heat the system generates and that I still need to get some work done while it's folding.

It's not feasable for me to run all 24 cores on this system at the moment.

I believe any number that isn't prime is ok (except 2 of course). I could be wrong though. Most people run even numbers though. For example if I run 11, it only actually runs 10.

Heat might be a lot better without too much impact on points if you turned HT off. HT is supposed to be a 15% boost to ppd, but a 50+% heat gain. So if you turn it off and run 12 cores, you might do better with less heat. Just a thought.

Why dont you have the SR-3 yet? No need to limit cores. wink.gif What client are you running?

Also if you're heat limited, stop the gpu's from folding before the cpu's. CPU is more efficient power wise

My only throught is that odd cores may cause some problems. Because most CPUs don't really have the advertised cores but instead use hyper threading. 2 virtual cores are essentially sharing the same physical core by taking turns while the other one is waiting. I could see problems come up where a process blocks FAH and leads to slowdowns. Just my two cents I am not a hardware expert by any stretch

Eh I think it is probably more then a 15% if you look at the 2500k vs the 2600k which are almost identical except for the HT the 2600k outperforms the 2500k. Yes it will produce more heat because it is doing work during times it would have sat idle
