USB stops working, comp shuts off, various driver problems...

Thread Starter
After installing the computer after an unbelievable amount of attempts, I have gotten to the OS environment. I have had problems installing updates as well as video drivers, but now it is really getting to me. My computer's USB ports will just "turn off", and after about 5 minutes of the computer being on, it will do a hard, automatic shut down, and will restart w/ safe mode options. Please help, overclockers...

Are you using an official copy of Windows?

Have you tried stable testing the components at stock specifications?

Are your ram specs clocked in at bios?

Make sure your temps are fin. If they are I think motherboard failure most likely. I had a P8Z68-V Pro die on me where all the SATA ports just dropped off the grid.

Yeah I am going to give them a call in the morning and check what could be wrong and maybe get an RMA. Nothing seemed too wrong, but I had had multiple problems connecting devices and installing and what not. The sudden restarts and USB ports getting turned off are only occurring in the OS environment. Windows shouldn't play a problem in this I don't believe, and I don't see how it could. I am going to check temperatures... I'll get back in a bit.

So from what I have tested, this doesn't occur in Safe Mode. When it does happen in regular mode (inevitable, will happen within 5 minutes of booting), it will be like the power instantly forcing off, not a safe shut down, and it will restart. The mouse and keyboard, and, as far as I know, all of the devices will shut off. I am lost at what to do I am going to try to do a repair install and reinstall my drivers and etc., but as for now this seems peculiar.

Edit: FYI, this only started after installing my graphics card, which was also a pain to do. When I had installed the GPU before install, I couldn't even proceed w/ installing windows, because it wouldn't just freeze right before you get to the first window.

I would disable automatic restart on system failure.

Follow this: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/automatic-restart-windows-7.htm

Now, the next time it BSOD's it won't just restart, and you will have some more information about what is actually causing the crashes. Do you have the chipset drivers installed? Have you recently updated your GPU drivers?

Solved it... I don't know exactly what I did, but I so far had re-installed w/ MBR instead of GPT, and fixed my memory clock, voltage, and speed to the recommended values (which were higher, I had 1033 MHz, 1.5 V, and 9-9-9-24 instead of recommended 1600 MHz, 1.65 V, and 8-8-8-24). Thread closed, I suppose? biggrin.gifthumb.gif
