GPU : Msi Twin Frozr III 570 OC
Case : I have a Cooler Master Haf 922. Very happy. Check it out
Motherboard : Asus p8z68v pro would be nice
HDD : Get aat least a 1TB 7200 one. If you can, get a SSD for faster boot up. I will be getting a 60GB one that will only have Windows in it.
Rams: I would get 2 4GB rams that are 1600mhz.

Those would be my options.

If you want you can get an ATI GPU as well but someone else can assist you with Ati better.

One question:
From where will your friend be buying the components?

I mean if he can buy from microcenter, then config will be different as most of components are priced lower in there. wink.gif

What will your friend be doing with the PC ? Is it for gaming ?

Also, your choice of the 2600K is misplaced at this point in time. For a budget of $1000 you can get into the X79 platform with an Asus P9X79 Motherboard and a Core i7 3820. You can overclock it to around 4.75 Ghz on something not exotic, according to AnandTech. Retail units may do even better since he tested the Core i7 3820 back in December of last year. Or, you can wait for April and get a brand new Ivy Bridge CPU and Z77 platform.

Also, that PSU, while being good, is outdated and, if I'm not wrong, scheduled to be discontinued. There are better PSUs out there for the same money. Get a Seasonic X650, which is 80 Plus Gold certified.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 (your friend's taste in aesthetics may vary from mine though), it's a very nice and solid case with plenty of potential.

RAM: You can get by with 8 GB for now unless he really needs 16 GB. At the prices they are at though, you might as well go for 16 GB.

HDD: WD Caviar Black 1 TB.

GPU: Depends on whether he's a gamer or not. The GTX 560 Ti is a good choice, there is also the GTX 560 Ti 448 cores with the same amount of Vram as the GTX 570. You can wait for AMD's new offerings in the mainstream space in a few weeks, that will make Nvidia lower the prices of their cards.

total= $993 before rebates.

also I would highly suggest getting the i5 2500k over the i7 2600k with a $1000 budget.

But why Hyper 212+ when one have the option to go with Hyper 212 EVO?
Yes, get the EVO. It has better heatpipes contact.
