Its interesting that the idea that desktops as we know it will one day be gone is so abhorrent to some of you. While my OP was in no way related to that you have some how made it about that. Its almost like someone has told you your religion is a lie lol!

I do agree that computing will not be what we expect it to be 10 years from now, but I really hope people stop trying to kill off the one thing DRIVING technology. Cause if that happens, technology will not recover that loss. rolleyes.gif

To be fair, desktops ARE dying for many purposes. Tablets, smart phones, laptops, terminal endpoints, etc. are all taking over in different areas. Obviously there will be a purpose for the sit down, big screen, comfy setup, power PC but we already have seen the PC die out of many past uses. So while I understand your point of PCs not ever dying out, your position of them 'driving' technology is a bit misguided.

The idea that desktop computing will one day cease to exist is flawed.  The presence of stand-still terminals will still be common in offices and homes, whether you might see the form factor resemble the traditional desktop or not.  Larger-sized desktops such as the ones we see today will continue to power installations for people who need serious prowess for things like gaming (i.e. most of the OCN community) and video editing.

I think desktops will live... But not in there current state. Why couldnt my desktop be a dock for my tablet with extra storage ram and a second cpu? Like that laptop dock mortola has for there phone, but with an intel skylake an amd radeon 9850 and 16 gigs of ram? I can also see tablets with much more power, once amd goes 22nm fusion could really step in, you can already buy a tablet with a c50 why not a low powered 22nm a8? For the tablet building i dont see it happening.

I know. That was my point. Now were at a moment where you can wirelessly connect to your Monitor and control your desktop with a wireless remote including scroll mouse input devices. So you can have a monitor literally in every room of your house and cook up that fantastic new dish for your Honey in the kitchen while watching streamed content or you can sit on the Dumper while you're fragging opponents in BF3 or you can listen to musak in every room of the house. It's only limited by your imaginatio and your pocket. That was my whole point about evolving. Hell desktop can even be as large as a server if you have the space to dedicate to one and go unconventional without a true "desktop". "Where is your computer?"... "Oh that tired old thing? We got a new Server case and dumped it into the ventilated cupboard in the middle of the house. It's even watercooled. Via osmosis tank. " thumb.gif lol
