New(ish) 6970

Hey I just bought a 6970 even though I'm already running a 6950 1gb. I know it will not be a big increase in my performance when running either one but I saw it on newegg's open box sales and jumped on it for fun. I figure if I don't like it I will just return it for the refund in a couple of weeks. I have a couple of questions because I have not ever used crossfire before:

As I understand it I should have no problems using crossfire for a 6950 and 6970?
I understand that my 6970 will probably downclock to the speed of the 6950?
The big question is will I only be able to use 1gb of memory between the 2 cards even though the 6970 has 2gb? (if thats the case I will not be using crossfire and may return the card)

I didn't get a great deal but I have the money and I was buying a new fan controller anyway so I added it on. I will probably keep it and sell the 6950 assuming that it is not too loud. I currently have an arctic cooling vga cooler on my 6950 and I cannot even hear the thing running over my case fans and I cannot stand loud computers.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to having some fun this next week smile.gif

You will only be able to use 1gb of memory on each card, teh extra gig on the 6970 will not be used. And your also right that the 6950 will drag down the performance of the 6970.

My suggestion would be to follow your 2nd idea: sell the 6950 and hang on to the 6970. It will be strong enough to power anything at 1080p, and max out allot of games.

I know it used to be that when using SLI or crossfire, the set up will run at the specs of the slower card. This includes VRAM and clocks.

So, unless things have changed, each card will be using 1GB of VRAM and running at the clock speed of the slower card. Its much like RAID... You will be limited by the weakest link in the chain.

But like I say, things may have changed since I last used SLI and Crossfire, so someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I would keep hold of the 6970 and sell the 6950.

Thanks for the replies. Do you know if it will be like I'm using a single 2gb card with more performance or will it use 1gb for one frame and then 1gb for the next frame? If it uses the 1gb+1gb combined I doubt my 6950 will hamstring me too much since it overclocks pretty well but if it uses 1gb and then 1gb I bet I will run into issues when I crank up the AA that 2 will cards will allow.

No question that the crossfire combo will give you more FPS in general. But each card will only access its own Vram. So your correct when you say "1gb for one frame and then 1gb for the next frame." There is also the issue with micro stutter that is more noticeable to some people then others.

You might try plugging the 6970 in for crossfire, and testing it out. Run the games at the settings you like, pay attention to fps and micro stutter. . Then yank it out and try just using the 6970, and see how you like it. Im going to bet the 6970 will preform well enough you'd rather pocket the money from selling your 6950!

If you keep your game settings and resolution as for the 6950 1GB, adding 6970 2GB will definitely boost your FPS by 70~90%.

The downside is, you won't be able to increase image settings such as AA level more than you can with a single 6950 due to the 1GB frame buffer limitation.

So the choice is really yours. If you want more FPS alone, keep the 6950 1GB to crossfire. If you want to have higher image quality settings, keep the 6970 2GB. You can not have both more FPS and higher image quality more than a single 6950 1GB.

Well the card came and I promptly pulled out my 6950 and tossed the 6970 in. But boy is this thing loud with the fan spinning up!!! It runs almost as cool as my 6950 and I'm sure the performance is there but I have yet to hit the 1gb limit on my 6950 and who needs 3 extra fps rolleyes.gif Think I'm going to rma it and hold on to my 6950. I really do not feel like pulling my aftermarket cooler off and putting it on the 6970 since I may have to order some new ram heatsinks. For the record it is the HIS 6970 with the small blower fan mounted on the very end.

Thanks again for the responses earlier, I did not bother with crossfire since I would be limited to 1gb with each card and I did not want to borrow a psu just to test it out.

Edit: Looks like newegg hit me with the 15% restocking fee...didn't think that would happen with an open box item, add the fact that I think I have to pay to ship it back I doubt I'll jump on another open box deal. Fun little $40 experiment....
