[ZDNet] Android now paying the price for iOS similarities - Page 10

One of my biggest irritations with android 1/2 is that it was a tap and drag the drop down, now with honecomb I don't have to worry about that anymore thumb.gif. I hated having to drag across the whole screen; my fingers don't like capacitive screens. Where did this webOS arguement come from, and why does an article written in 2011 about the history of android twist the truth due to convenience?

If you were paying attention, you'd see some people trying to claim that Android invented the notification center and that everyone has copied Android, even before Android 1.0 existed, mind you. Taping on the status area to bring up a notification area isn't anything new. This is the point I've been making. Likely the reason their application hasn't been approved? webOS is yet another OS that also has a notification center which Apple hired some devs from to improve theirs, which to some people, means the devs are somehow copying Android.

I was paying attention, and the only person to explicitly state the bolded part was you. Everybody else seemed to be commenting on the drop-down.

I'm still interested in that wunderkind, if you've got any extra.

Palm, nokia, WM, moto, et al all had "notification centers" before iOS/'droid.

And the badges thing, if I understand what they are correctly, something similar is in 3.0+.

Technology evolves, I think we all understand that. My major issue is the refusal to license these patents that they "invent".

Wont happen unless apple refuses to license them from moto. Most of motorolla's patents are using FRAND terms(that's what they get for pioneering a market thumb.gif).

Drop-down notification center. Are we not talking about the same thing? How many people have said "Apple copied Android" in this thread? Too many to count. I responded to this original post:

So, if others have had notifications since the 90s, how exactly is Apple copying Android again? Especially when they've been working on the smartphone/PDA OS since 1987?

This is an app badge: badge1.png
Android does not allow changing of the application icon. Both platforms can use widgets to emulate the iPhone method of display notifications though, but that's not the same thing.

I encourage it, it's fun to watch all the nerds in here get so upset.

Do we need to bring out the Blackberry notification bar to explain to you as well? Did Blackberry and Palm rip off Android too?
How about the Sony Ericssons from 2005 with all their notifications in a centralized place. Centralized notifications aren't new... Apple has been working on smartphones/PDAs since 1987 with the Newton.
Where do Apple's iOS notifications actually look like they came from? Growl

Google hired a webOS designer a few years ago too. How does your argument justify apples use of a pull down notification system again?
PoopaScoopa, just to be clear. When we say notifications when referring to Android and iOS, we are talking about the drop down notification bars. When you force a discussion about a term as vague as "notifications" into semantics. You get nowhere, such a course of action would be a complete waste of time. When someone calls my name, I have got a notification that my attention is needed, for example. If we could avoid such a course it would be appreciated.

When discussing smart phones, notifications encumpass that whole interface. Not just an icon telling you, you have a missed call. It is fairly obvious these type of notifications have been around for a very very long time indeed.

If you would like to post a link that would corroborate some of what you have been saying, then maybe people would take you a little more serious. You really need some evidence to back up what you are saying. You can't expect people to take what you say at face value.
