I didn't actually install it. Went off to D/L it but was going at 100kb/s so I just canceled. Thanks Shrak.

I used to use openbox with tint2, xfce terminal (it has nice transparency settings) and cairo-compmgr for some nice effects. If you are willing to put the work in it can look awesome. If you aren't then I'd say just use KDE it's simple to make a nice looking desktop.

If you're into simplicity, go for Mint 11. Avoid Mint 12 as Gnome 3 really screwed with the fundamental simplicity of the distro (in 11 there's 1 system preference pane but in 12 there's three). It's also pretty customisable as my screenshot below proves.

Definitely agree about Gnome 3. It's not very nice and removes features like adding launchers etc.

Because the most recent versions have a "windows feel" perhaps.I am running 11.10 off a 16gb ssd and the little guy sure is snappy. For serious work I vote for Debian. Debian probably does not fill the bill in regards to looking nice but it sure can be twisted anyway you want.

Are we talking functionally nice ? as in a intuitive layout, simply navigation, well sorted easily adjusted settings etc ? or are we just talking eye candy ? becuase a shiny car with the gas pedal in the trunk and the streeing wheel mounted in ffront of the engine, regardless of how good it looks, is largely to dificult to contend with.

Haha nice tongue.gif I agree that debian is just amazing but it has a learning curve to it that some people will never be able to do. I would definitely try mint 11 because personally I think gnome 3 was a step in the wrong direction and only made it easier for more people to say they can use linux.

Personally I think its because most people have never bothered trying anything other than Ubuntu yet feel the need to jump in with a recommendation, despite the fact that they're clearly not qualified to comment.

I know that probably comes across as arrogant / snobby/ hateful / whatever, but I'm just sick and tired of Ubuntu being everyone's default recommendation when it really is just rubbish these days..
