can a 6870 & 6850 be crossfired?

Thread Starter

I was wondering. I sent in an RMA to XFX because my 4890 was completely shot. They sent me back an XFX 6850 which is not here yet. Can you crossfire a 6850 + 6870 & how does that work. I am assuming a my Sapphire 6870 will download to match the 6850?

I may end up selling both and grabbing a 7950/70 in maybe a month or so.

Cards just have to be the same #X## (100's and 1000's obviously also) series to be able to X-fire ... a 6950 will x-fire with a 6990 ... but a 6970 will not X-fire with a 6870 ... get it ? wink.gif

The EXCEPTION being the 6770 & 6750 being able x-fire with the 5770 & 5750.

not exactly sure myself I am assuming it will be just like having x2 6850s in crossfire even tho one is a 6870. maybe close to a 580 in performance? or just under?

I had a 6870 and a 6850 roughly 6 months back. You are spot on. It preforms like 6850's in crossfire. Or very similar (fps) to a 580.

edit: but, you'd be best with a single card setup, and as far as AA and graphics quality, a 7950/70 would blow it out of the water.

It should be well above a GTX580.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_6850_CrossFire/1.html

Edit: Not well above, just like and maybe a bit over the GTX580. Forgot the gap between the GTX480 and the 580.

Pretty much ... each card does it's own thing ... so it will run just slightly better than x2 6850's, but not quite as good as x2 6870's, so whatever that translates out to ...

That is understandable & I agree I would like to have a single card setup but the 6850 was free so I may as well use it for now. I will plan on getting a 7950/7970 but not yet at least for a month. I have alot of funds right now going out on my new PSP Vita & getting a new car in a week or so plus a Disney Cruise.

For now I am sure it will be fine. Its better then running a single 6870 its free performance
