AMD A6-3650 HTPC not filling the screen on my HDTV!

Thread Starter
Starting this thread because I have searched high and low and played around with every possible setting and messed up some in the process and then restored that, but still do not have a fix for the issue!

This is my hardware:

HTPC: The one on my signature below, no VGA using the on-board video of the A6 to display, so it is the catalyst controller that controls the display! If you need catalyst version and driver version number ask and I will update those!

HDTV: Samsung DLP 67" 1080p used as the display.

The problem is that the computer screen (everything else except for WMC) is not filling the screen or it is filling itself too much (I can only see the middle part of it)! The crazy thing is when in WMC it works exactly and fills it corner to corner, also when connected to my other Haans-G 28" monitor it works just fine, but just on the DLP and when out of WMC the display is all messed up!

On the HTPC - I have tried adjusting the underscan and overscan on the AMD catalyst control center (CCC), I've tried adding the 1080x1920 @ 60hz presets and tried to reset it, none of this has worked so far! I managed to mess it up bad, and stretched the image beyond the screen and messed up the WMC display as well!

On the TV - I've tried to change the picture size of the display from Just scan to 16:9 to 4:3 and Wide, did not solve that either! I have tried to reset the catalyst to factory settings and tried it from the beginning still no luck!

I ended messing up the WMC display when I switched to another resolution, but managed to get it back somehow (don't know what I did but it was factory reset and something else before that)!

The HTPC works well, since I have it set to boot into WMC and rarely have to come out of it, but when I do come out of it, it is a nightmare as no it is in a stretched mode and I cant see any of the desktop icons or the taskbar, just the middle portion.

I know the TV is on 1080x1920 @ 60Hz as it keeps telling me so, as Samsung TV's do! All my other devices play 1080p quality video on the same screen without any issues whatsoever (PS3, ROKU-XS, etc).

I also have a receiver connected i the midst, here is the cable mapping:

HTPC ---> Yamaha RX-V671 ---> TV (all HDMI)! Could it have something to do with the receiver setup, if so what should I change?

All help is welcome, thank you!

I have a few suggestions.  Try each one by one.

1)  Make the connection directly from the HTPC's graphics cards to the HDTV, bypassing the Yamaha receiver. This diagnostic step should help to see if it is the receiver that is messing up.

2)  Try all three (3?) HDMI inputs of the DLP HDTV, especially HDMI3.

This is because this input is more designed to receive PC signal than the other two.

(Underscan/Overscan often happens when a PC is connected to a TV, especially if HDMI is being involved in the connection)

3)  While connected to any of the HDMI input (especially HDMI3/DVI), edit the name of the Source Input Name. Change it to ''PC'' or ''PC-HDMI'' or something similar (without the quotation marks).

This trick often can stop the underscan/overscan. See excerpt (page 23 of the User Manual) below where to make the change.

Thank you Windfire! + Rep for that suggestion!

I am feeling pretty optimistic, will try this and post back if possible with some pictures!

Quick question, if it works without the AVR then does than mean that we cannot get the AVR back into the equation later?

I love the sound quality provided by the AVR especially for my blu-ray and MKV rips!

As mentioned in the OP I have tried all the options under the CCC menu, but none of them fixed it! Thank for your input anyways!

If it is confirmed the messing up is due to the Yamaha, there are still a few things to do to get it back into the equation.

For example, the HTPC can send the audio signal to an audio input of the receiver (which then outputs to the speakers) and, at the same time, sends the video signal directly to the TV.  In this way, the receiver can still handle the audio portion and provide good sound quality.

And there might be other methods.  I have yet to look at the User Manual of the Yamaha receiver.

Well it worked, so thank you for that! It would be awesome if I you know of way to tweak the settings on the Yamaha receiver to mimic the same when the HTPC is connected via the receiver!

Otherwise, looks like I would have to invest in a sound card, as my MoBo does not have a lot of Audio options as far as the back panel goes - this is my Motherboard - ECS A75F-M2, there is a S/PDIF header on the internal connectors though, don't know whether that would work though!

Please let me know if that works or what you are able to find out after looking at the Yamaha manual - here is the V671.

Now here is the mapping which works for the resolution:

HTPC (HDMI) ----> Samsung DLP (HDMI3/DVI named as PC) as suggested by windfire above!

The problem is the audio, I do not want to loose HD audio, I just found out that even if I get the S/PDIF to work it won't carry all the tracks especially while playing blu-ray quality audio! So I was wondering about this solution.

I use the on-board on the Llano APU for both my audio and video right now. If I get a low profile discrete GPU like this one connect it and disable crossfire within BIOS and use these as to separate cards then can I use the on-board for the video and the discrete for the audio via the Yamaha Receiver, would that work? Is there a way with with AMD graphics, to be able to send audio through one HDMI adaptor?

So this is what I'm planning:

For Video:
HTPC (HDMI on board) ----> Samsung DLP (HDMI3 named as PC)

For Audio:
HTPC (HDMI on Discrete GPU) ----> Yamaha RX V-671 (HDMI 4)

So when I switch on the HTPC I turn the AVR input to HDMI 4 and TV input to HDMI3/DVI, would that work, would the video audio be in sync? Is there a

I have not yet read the Yamaha manual thoroughly but only scan through a few essential pages.  But here are some quick comments:-

1)  Is the diagram below showing your current connection, using the digital optical SPDIF output of the motherboard for audio?

What problem are you facing with?  What do you mean by 'won't carry all the tracks'?

htpc to yamaha to samsung - current.JPG

2)  As the renaming trick works, I suggest reconnecting the Yamaha back into the equation.

See the diagram below. I think this is the simplest method and it should work.

The A75F-A's HDMI output should send out both video and audio signals.

htpc to yamaha to samsung method a.jpg

3)  I suggest exhausting all options with your current hardware first before adding another graphics card into the picture.
