"MacRumors has now been able to obtain one of these iPad 3 displays and examine it under a microscope in an effort to determine whether it is indeed an ultra-high resolution Retina display. Physically, the purported iPad 3 display is the same size as the current iPad 1 and iPad 2 display at 9.7" in diagonal, and looks quite similar to the naked eye"

"Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048x1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024x768. Such a screen should be able to display much sharper images as compared to the previous generation iPads"

I'll bet you 20 bucks it won't be more than 50 bucks more at launch smile.gif

That's pretty slick! Hope it doesn't kill the battery and/or make gaming on the iPad a major chore. As for price, I won't speculate, but the competition is gonna have to adopt high res displays ASAP.

iPad 1 and 2 were all marked up so high, that by only increasing iPad 3 by $50 bucks, its going to look like a "steal".

I'd be suprised. This isn't a cheap IPS panel, after all. And it ain't Dell either.

Retarded decision.

When the world takes advantage of no larger 1920x1080 media, such a screen is useless.  Apple should have gone the simplicity way, sell their iPad with a 1920x1080 screen, and adjust existing apps to fit the screen size if so necessary.  Taking on a ridiculous 2048x1536 screen is just going to drive up the costs for the customer because of the unique screen - moreso than the ripoff high price that Apple already charges.

I certainly won't even consider buying one.  It is a time when HD content and 16:9 content ratio is reigning and I can't believe that Apple must insist on taking a step backwards.

Apple kept the reso ratio 4:3, hence 2048x1536. Pixel density for the win.

Do want!

It might not...we already know Apple strives for finding agencies that only get 1.6 cents for every iPad sold or whatever it is (the workers)?

Anyways, a high resolution screen is nice. But based on what I've seen on the IPS panels they have, they aren't top notch. Heck, Apple's IPS desktops are equivalent to TFT LCDs in colour accuracy.
