There's no way Apple would use this display but keep the SGX543MP2. It means games like Infinity Blade 2 which run flawlessly at 60 FPS will be running at most 30 FPS, if not less -- gaming is a big emphasis for Apple and they won't cripple the iPad 3 like that.

Mobile gaming that is.

The iPad 3 is playing catch up to the Asus Transformer Prime, which already sports a 1280x800 resolution. The "competition" already has high res displays.

LoL what real estate? It's the same 9.7" of real estate that the iPad 1 & 2 had.

Mmm mostly, but that's changing. The games on the Mac App Store are slowly growing, and with Game Centre that'll be even more encouraged, not to mention the good graphics that'll be in the MacBook Pro's and iMac's, etc.

The iPad 3's not playing catch up resolution wise. 1280x800 (1m pixels) isn't that much higher than 1024x768 (800k), but 2048x1536 (3.1m) is significantly higher than not only that resolution, but even the 1920x1200 (2.3m) resolution the Prime 700T is coming out with later.

How is it not playing catch up? Does the iPad 2 have the same resolution as the Prime? No. Does it have higher resolution than the Prime? No. Does it have lower resolution than the Prime? Yes. By definition that means the iPad 3 is playing catch up, regardless if this rumor is true and the res is higher when it's released. I guess even common sense goes out the window when you post in an Apple thread.

LoL what real estate? It's the same 9.7" of real estate that the iPad 1 & 2 had.

I don't know about that
iPad 1 April 2010 1024 x 768
iPad 2 March 2011 1024 x 768
Transformer 1 April 2011 1280 x 800, it came out after 2 generations of IPad and only manage to push a few pixels in both dimensions.
Transformer 2 December 2011 1280 x 800
iPad 3 March 2012 2048x1536, now that's improvement (I'm just talking about resolution here), this will set a new standard and everyone else will follow
It's always easier to release something later and improve on the competition a little bit, but it's always about who gets there first
and for awhile now it has always been Apple (MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, ultrabook)
Don't let hatred blind you from the truth.

The Asus Transformer Prime's Tegra 3 SoC is already capable of outputting 1600p not only on a single display, but multiple displays. A5 isn't up to the task and we've yet to see what A6 can do.

You're contradicting yourself as none of these things Apple did first.

I did not say they invented those things, they created a market for it and everyone else follows and has been trying to catch up. That's my definition of "get there first"
Kinda like Facebook.
