[Android] Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server when adding Google Account

This error is completely off - the real cause is not even close to what it's saying.

For some, resetting to factory defaults worked. For me, however, it didn't. It seems, that at least on HTC phones, you must have a mobile data connection (non-WiFi) in order to link your Google account. Once I had my APN correctly configured so the phone could connect using 3G, it worked.

I struggled with this error for days, even going as far as unlocking my brand new HTC EVO 3D and voiding the warranty to try alternative ROMs. What a waste. If only the error had been more descriptive (and any support person anywhere knew how to deal with it), I wouldn't have had to void the warranty.

Here's hoping this post saves somebody's warranty down the line.

If anything ever happened, couldn't you just re-lock the bootloader, and nobody we be the wiser?

Nope, because in order to unlock it, you must get a token from the HTC site which matches a token you get from your device, which you paste there to get your unlock token. There's one token for every device.

This is probably the first thing they check when they get a warranty request.
