Terrible wireless connection, Roommates wireless connection is good. - Page 3

@OP

Since you have roommate(s), is there someone else in the property that perhaps you don't have much to do with? Could they have something that's interfering?

So it worked fine 3 months ago. Now its not. Nothing has changed, and your machine is in the same exact spot.

Has your landlord moved or rotated the router by chance?

Honestly, the problem lies 110% within your wireless card. I'm not a betting man, but I'll bet on it. Try using a USB wireless adapter that you can move around. If you don't have one, then I suggest you buy this one and give it a try:
http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-RNX-N2LX-802-11b-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B0045K7GL2

It's only $22 with free super saver shipping. I went from an internal Wireless G card to that on my kid's spongebob machine. The difference was night and day, and he's only MAYBE 8-10 feet away from the router. Went from stuttering trying to playback standard definition videos, to having absolutely no issue with full HD content.

No need for that....

ok im stupid and an idiot all in one software flow control check to see if maybe it accidently got turned on or off. Im not sure why I didnt think of that in the first place. That can have drastic affects on speed.
if its off try turning it on if its on try turning it off. sometimes its detramental to speed. I shoulda thought about it first. as I have to have mine off to get max speed.

Oh snap just got home from work, going to try everything!!

pioneerisloud: I have a USB wireless adapter ill try that again but I think I tried it before and it didn't work, also I was recently using my computer on dif wireless connection and it seemed to work fine. I didn't varying speeds just one solid 5mbps speed (it was slow but at its proper rated speed)!

Edit:

Ive tried reinstalling newer drivers and have noticed something.... My install gets hung up at "now installing Cisco EAP-FAST" tried to read up on it via Google.... got lost and gave up!

Edit#2 Just tried my wireless network adapter... same ****! VEDAIRE what is Software Flow Control I tried googling it but its way over my head!

No need for EAP-FAST. That is for 802.1x networks. You will be running a PSK.

Wireless networks can fluctuate a good bit due to interference, be it physical or RF. This can happen much more with a SOHO router that is in a residential environment.

Most of the time the issue is within the client card. It's easy for the router to blast the signal out and the client to hear it, but harder for the client to send the signal back and the router hear it. Most SOHO routers sit at full power(near 100mW) and most all client cards transmit between 15-32mW. So there is a transmit power mismatch. The signal can be greatly affected by things like walls, glass, metal, microwaves, cordless phones (2.4GHz or 5.8GHz), Bluetooth from phones and keyboards, human bodies (Water content), etc.

To have a reliable connection from a SOHO router, you need to be fairly close and without a ton of obstructions that can cause Multipath. 802.11n MiMo can drastically help in extensive Multipath areas.

How many feet are you from the router? Has you landlord moved the router? could he have moved it into another room, which he shuts the door at certain times? Does he have the antennas positioned incorrectly?

Are there any other Wireless Networks near? You can always download inssider or VistaStumbler and look at the RF. See what channels are being saturated.

As for your room mate having a better signal, that can be caused by you have two different cards. Try the USB card in yours, then try it in his. Do all testing in the same room.

Time for me to sleep!

Im less then 20 feet, on that note my next door neighbor is further away and till they put a password on there connection i was getting 15-18mbps. Ill ask him about the anteneas and door shutting.

There is a wireless network that i just talked about and now its locked, I am currently on channel 4 while they are on channel 8. Ill look in to inssier and vistastumbler but im thinking they will tell me the same thing as what i just told you.

I actually used the USB card that I have now in my roomates laptop and hade a very good connection, thats why it leads me to belive its not the card in my computer.

this is strange. as were talking about connection my main router is near my dads room which is about 100 feet away and I get 60+mbps downloads with my laptop on wifi
post #30 of 43
software flow control is a setting if you go into device manager and go to your network adapter.
right click go to properties from here look for flow control or performance options under that you'll have various
options for flow control try changing those. to the different ones see if one of them makes it better. if not set it back to what it was.

with mine if I have flow control on it totally drops out my speed on my connection i'll go from my full 100mb connection to like 10
with it off I get full 100mb from it.
