i7 920 Just fell into my lap for free need some info

Thread Starter
Ok so first off my quest for 4.0GHz with an H80 and my Q6600 has failed. it just wouldnt stay stable above 3.6GHz.

But I just got an i7 920 SLBCH 3841A826 CPU with a "working" Asus P6T rev1.01G motherboard and some Kingston Value ram. (all from a buddy who was upgrading to an i7 2600K and he didnt want it so $0)

So I am going to be tearing down my old build and building this one up in the coming weeks. What I want to know is how good or bad is this board and should I change it out for a better one like the Sabertooth x58 board (or other board that is still availible on Newegg or Tigerdirect)

I am looking at getting the Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz 1.5v dual channel Kit x3 to replace the kingston ram.
I am going to continue to use my H80 since i just bought it like 4 months ago.

So I am just looking for imput on good boards that are still available and the major + and - of what to expect.

That is all. thanks

Jim

The P6T board will have no problem OCing your C0 revision CPU. The C0 tends to OC to 3.8GHz, which the P6T can handle without any issue. That board can OC a capable i7 920 D0 CPU to 4.0Hz without a problem. It will be a great system for you. I wouldn't upgrade anything else besides the ram as you stated you are already planning to do.

If the board works there is no reason to change unless you want some specific feature or are going after exotic cooling.

The money would be better spent on a SSD.

First hand experience speaking here. Using a Asus P6T and a I7 920 D0 4.0 GHz stable baby biggrin.gif The P6T will handle 4.0 and more no problem.

The only thing you really need to be aware of is that the 920 will produce a lot of heat when you ramp up the vcore. Also the HT produces extra heat so if you are having trouble keeping he CPU cool then disabling HT will help. I ran my CPU with out HT when I had it clocked to 3.7 and used a Air cooler.

Why do you want to change the ram, you'll gain nothing from switching ValueRAM to Vengeance. Ram is ram.

Not quite. The 920 is OC'd using the Base clock. So you need ram that can run @ high MHz or you might have stability issues when you push for higher OC's.

Edit: OP how much ram do you intend to get? 8GB x3 = 24GB using 6 sticks?

O'rly? Didn't know that.
[/sarcasm]

What I did forget is that the ValueRAM is (likely) 1333mhz so yeah, some g.skill or corsair 1600mhz 3x4gb kit might be beneficial for overclocking.
I admit my defeat tongue.gif Peace.
Hell yeah dude thats what Im talking about. Isnt there a i7 overclocking guide on here somewhere cause there is alot of term changes in what you play with but yeah sounds like a great idea, slap a 12gb tri in there and you should be good to go for even longer then what your Q6600 has taken you so far. And if i remember correctly 2133mhz is where its at for max overclocking so your not ram capped in a sense lol. I hope you got a golden chip so that ram speed is a limiting factor instead of its oc ability thumb.gif GL

I plan to go straight to 24GB 6x4GB.

Thanks for the input everyone. The Cooling like I said will be the H80 so since that keeps my Q6600 cool at 3.6GHz I am not too worried about keeping the 920 cool. Obviously if it gets too hot then ill just have to swap it out for something better. As for why I would want a better board, I guess if there isnt much to worry on they I dont need it, The only nice factor about the Sabertooth x58 was the 2x SATA 6GBs which would be nice for the velociraptor 600GB I am going to order soon.

As for the SSD well Im a tech at Tigerdirect and I have seen so many of them come back bad (~1 out of 3 Vertex 3's) so I'm still nto sold on the drives + the performnance overall compaired to my current Velociraptor 300GB isnt much to me (~9 second differnce in boot time whoo.... /sarcasim) and the Price per GB is still too high for me.

Thanks for the guide I'll read it when i get off work.

are there any x58 Boards that are UEFI BIOS? did a quick google and the first page links didnt help
