ASUS P9X79 motherboard owners, where are you at? - Page 12

I just found out from Intel support this morning that the i7 3930K cpu is only compatible with 1600Mhz RAM Chips nothing higher
thats why my system has been freezing since building it over the weekend so I have switched to Patriot 16gb 1600Mhz 4x4 ram
hopefully this will resolve the freezups and I can continue happily along my merry way smile.gif

"Officially" SB-E processors only compatible with DDR3-1600 RAM but you can run higher than that. This is what we called overclock. Just like when overclocking CPU, you probably need more voltage with your previous RAMs when running higher than 1600MHz.

I have done search after search online across various sites and have not found an answer to my problem.

Any 3-pin fan plugged into my cpu fan header or cpu-fan opt header on my P9X79 PRO motherboard, results in RPM's of 100%. I have seen on another site where this motherboard requires a 4-pin fan. This in itself does not seem like too big a deal, however, I would like to implement a water-cooling solution and cannot find one that has a 4 pin connector to the header.

I originally tried to install Corsair H100. The fan speeds were 100% all the time and could not be controlled using the fan controller on the H100 unit. Also, the cooler was really loud. I have done some research on Thermaltake Water 2.0 Extreme but it also appears to have a 3-pin connector.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
CPU_FAN & CPU_OPT fan headers are for PWM 4-pin fans. If you connect the 3-pin fans to these header, they will work in 100% speed. If you want variable speed, you need PWM 4-pin fans. (In the manual, go to "7. CPU, chassis, and power fan connectors", there you'll see the 4th connector on the CPU_FAN & CPU_OPT are PWM).

The 3-pin on the Corsair H100 is actually for the pump speed reading - it feeds pump speed to BIOS for monitoring. This way you can monitor the pump speed in BIOS or using monitoring tools such as Open Hardware Monitor. Pump supposed to work in constant speed. If you're thinking to control the pump speed using fan controller, don't. It can kill the pump. If your H100 generate grinding noise, there are two things you can do, 1) RMA or 2) go here for alternative solution.

The H100 stock fans does a bit loud when full speed but they are good fans for radiator; high airflow & high static pressure. If you can't stand the noise, you can always replaced the fans with silent one, for example Scythe Gentle Typhoon.

The H100 fans (connected to the H100 CPU block) should not spin full speed all the time. Basically, it will speed up if coolant temperature increased or speed down when coolant temperature decrease. If somehow the fans always at full speed, you can try reset the firmware. You can find the procedure here.

Thank you much for your help. I believe I had a bad H100 unit. I wasn't initially aware of it, but Frys had sold me a re-furbished unit. The price was marked down but they misled me to believe it was just a sale.

I am now setting my eyes on the NZXT KRAKEN X60. This will come with software where I can monitor the pump speeds and fan speeds.

Thanks again!thumb.gif

Note for those running windows 8 on their X79 ASUS board (there doesn't seem to be software for the newer version on Intel's website for Win 7, so it looks like this is specific to Win 8).

I wanted to post information on Intel's Management Engine firmware (FW). As of the latest 3305 bios available Jan 2013, ASUS has not updated the management engine FW past 7.1.21.1134, while Intel has moved to version 8.1.10.1286. There is a way to flash the firmware manually to your bios, so I thought I would give it a try, and did so easily.

I've attached all the files you will need. Start by unzipping the attached file to your main C drive. Note this is a "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK". Having said that, I tried the newest 8.1.2.1318 version for Z77 which caused the system to restart whenever I tried to shut down, but it still load into windows. So I was able to easily reflash the backup I made of the original, reset bios, and update back to 8.1.10.1286, which has been perfectly stable for me.

When you extract the zip file to your c: drive, you will have an MEFLASH folder:
MEFLASH.zip 1375k .zip file

You will need to open the CMD as Admin. to do this, press [windows key+X]

From CMD, type "cd c:/MEFLASH" minus the quotes

At this point you can backup your original ME firmware by entering the following command: "fptw64 -ME -D backup.bin" minus the quotes. It will overwrite the backup FW I've already saved from my own bios, which is version 7.1.21.1134

Then flash the new firmware by typing: "fptw64 -ME -F ME8_X79_HED.bin" minus quotes

There will be a message about no region or something, then it will continue to flash. Once complete, you will have to power down, not just a restart. For Win 8, move the mouse off any active windows and press [Alt+F4] and select shutdown. After the computer restarts, enter bios and verify Management Engine version. It is listed in the upper left corner in the Main bios tab.

And last, get the corresponding Intel management Engine Software:

Intel ME 8.1.10.1286 Windows 8 x32 and x64

For those wondering how important the ME is:
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=1&model=P8P67+DELUXE&id=20110121215331816&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
Quote:
You need MEI to do "anything related to the CPU under OS".
Want to change the CPU Vcore / multiplier / BLCK.... anything.

Without it, your system may not even be able to display the BCLK right. It is that important.

And to your questions.
1. Yes, it is essential to have MEI installed before installing AiSuite II, else TurboV EVO and Auto Tuning won't work.
2. The reason why it is huge and installs fast is because most of it is windows update related.
3. If you want more performance, enable TPU. For more power saving, enable EPU. For both, enable both.
4. Yes, BIOS settings can override the configuration of these switches.

I scratched this together from a few sites, but this is where I started, and the main source for my info above:
http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?24150-Intel-MEI-amp-ME-Version-8.1.10.1300-amp-8.1.10.1286-(driver-and-FW)

Also noticed new SATA drivers.
Entreprise driver V3.6.0.1093 dated 3/5/2013

iRST driver V11.7.0.1030 dated 3/5/2013

The latter is the first non enterprise drivers for these mobos. I beleive that driver supports "trim" for RAID arrays. I may be wrong.
has anyone tried either of the new drivers?

It looks like the new iRST drivers are for X79 Smart Response, previously only seen on the Z68 and Z77 chipsets.
