Netflix playback issues, help?

Ok so I picked up a new netbook, its an HP Dv1, with the following specs: AMD E-450 fusion 1.65ghz cpu/6320 gpu, 4gb ddr3 ram, 320gb 7200rpm hdd. When I watch netflix the video and words get out of sync. I know this machine can do it, because I had an asus with an E-350, 1gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm drive, with Win7 home premium, that did just fine. Also don't say bloatware, because I put a fresh copy of Win7 ultimate 64bit on it. Any comments about hp will be met with my arrival at your house, for a stern talking. biggrin.gif

Could you clarify on the "words" getting out of sync - the subtitles, or the audio?

First:
-AMD graphics driver version?
-Is this the official release from HP?

And I have to ask, but did you install all the drivers, and properly (meaning, chipset first, then maybe graphics, audio, touchpad, wifi etc etc; restarting after each one?)

Things I would try:

-Disable Windows Aero if you haven't already
-Change the power management settings so minimum CPU speed = max CPU speed = 100% (just temporarily for troubleshooting, then switch back to min 50%/max 100% or whatever)
-Check your CCC panel, see if the option to enable Internet hardware acceleration, is enabled (go into advanced mode, you'll have to check through all the panels as I forget which one, and I'm stuck with just my laptop for now ).
-Try it on all the different browsers - IE, FF, Chrome.
-Run Windows Update, make sure Silverlight is the newest version, then make sure the newest version isn't a total POS (well, more of a POS than other Silverlight versions)
-Is there any way to check your framerate? My assumption is you're most likely dropping frames.
-Lastly, if you haven't yet, disable all the Windows Features/Services that you don't need.

Of course it's possible I'm completely off-base, my assumption is the video is choppy/ you're dropping frames. If you give me more feedback and I'm waaay off, there's other things to try perhaps.

Ok I will try to clarify, when I am watching say a movie, the picture on screen will be several seconds behind the spoken words. I will hear them speak then will see the action they are talking about.

Version is 12.1
No, I went to the ati website.

Yes all the drivers have been installed properly.

All things are up to date, including windows and silverlight.
I have the computer on high performance and all the cpu settings to max.
Aero is disabled.
Doesn't matter which browser I use.
I have no clue on framerate, or how to find it, I doubt fraps will work.

What is my CCC panel?
I have never had to disable any services yet.....guess I could if I knew what to kill.

For the AMD CCC:

1) Right click on desktop
2) Click AMD Vision Engine Control Center
3) Click "Video Quality" under Video settings
4) Click "Other Video Settings"
5) Scroll down, click "Apply current video quality settings to Internet video"

If you want to get really hardcore, you could disable ALL of the "pretty" features - this will make Windows look like Window98. Somewhere between negligible to ~ <5% gain in performance vs. Windows Basic.

As for services to disable - check http://blackviper.com , and go for the "Safe" settings. W7Ultimate is overkill, bet you'll find at least 10 you don't need.

I've also read that Windows Media Center or Google Chrome work best - personally idk how to get Netflix working in WMC.

Also, I haven't used Netflix much at all, so I'm not sure it's possible to lower the resolution - but if so, 720p should be fine for playing on the laptop, and it wouldn't be terrible even on a 1080p TV.

There are other nonsensical "methods" of fixing the problem, looks like a headache but supposedly the comment below the article is supposed to work. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee309563%28VS.96%29.aspx

Do you think premium 64 bit would be better? I can put whatever version of windows I need to on it. I tried the backviper thing and had a blue screen and some odd errors.

Absolutely, Windows 7 Home Premium will cut down on RAM usage, unnecessary services etc. Realistically I'd guess maybe 2% performance gain, plus some non-measureable amount from stupid background processes interrupting you. Ignore Blackviper, consider the other stuff I put in my 2nd post, and try W7HP last. Or try it first, then the other troubleshooting steps.

I may try that then, going back. I have plenty of ram 4gb currently...and ram is never going over 2gb of usage.

The system idle process is the only thing using tons of cpu.

Netflix can help you diagnois this issue. They can see various performace parameters from any device you use to watch.I had a Dell Dimension 4300s and I got video stutter. They were able to tell me my cpu usage was pegged ay over 95%.This helped me dicide it was not a god Netflixs machine(only saw the trouble with full screen viewing).I would give them a call and they can inform you of some technical parameters they can see from their side.
