Additionally, the PERC cards don't have active cooling - they are usually in servers with plenty of fans - but really just make sure they have plenty of airflow around them and you'll be fine.

Thanks, I'll be getting the Define XL so i guess it won't be a problem. I'm also looking at server / workstation boards, any recommendations for a mainly storage board ?

If I'm not too late....

For a RAID card I have an HP P400 with 512mb cache and raid battery - I think you can find them on ebay for $30.

The $6 cable from china would work on it and allow you to have 8 drives (SAS or SATA) depending on the cable.

My VM storage environment is handled by a little P400 controlling 8x HP 146GB 15K 2.5" SAS drives in a 1TB RAID 5 array.

Backups and such are done to the 2TB disks above the lil SAS's, VMs are hosted on a Dell Poweredge r610 (2x Xeon x5650's 48GB DDR3 ECC)

Luckily file servers can live on a dual core, VM hosts need a bit more umph!

What ram did you pick? Also what case is it? Also I am looking for a bit stronger thing than a storage server. While it's main function would be a storage unit, I'd like it to do more like running a few VMs and stuff for myself and school etc. So looking at a Xeon E-1230 / 1270 and something between 24 and 48 gb ram.

The RAM in the file server is just plain jane 2x2GB Mushkin DDR3.

RAM in the VM Host is 12x4GB DDR3 ECC.

File server case is some cheap $35 case from newegg, felt like buying a white one for some reason. Might migrate everything over to an antec 1200.

The E3-1230 supports a max of 32GB of RAM. However, you will be extremely hard pressed to find a mini-ITX socket 1155 board with 4 RAM slots that supports 8GB modules.

Why do you want a mini-ITX board?

I've changed from Mini ITX to anything that can fit in a Fractal Designs Define XL (ATX) and below. I'll change the main post, sorry.

Anything i should know?

If you're only looking to run 6 drives in RAID, Linux software RAID will easily do the job. My friend's 5 x 2 TB RAID 5 array can easily push 350MB/s read, and that's with a Sempron 140 and a single 2GB stick of DDR3.
