im pretty sure those are estimations and by no means a rule anymore considering that cameras and lenses have changed since that was most likely made up. and i dont think that focal length is the main factor that determines "what you can get" but the actual weight of the camera + lens. which in most cases the longer the focal length the more weight which means harder to hold still for longer shutter speed.

the 50 1.8 is no harder to hold for a shot at 1/30 than a 28mm prime that is also made of plastic that has more weight to it than the 50 does i bet. assuming you are in decent physical condition and dont find the camera without glass heavy and dont drink lots of caffeine wink.gif

It is still a good rough rule of thumb, but it tends to under-estimate how low you can hold. Most people can actually hold a 50 down to about 1/30 of a second no problem.

yea. i mean im not most people but i can get a fairly clean shot with a 70-200 at 1/50 and with IS turned on i can totally get a decent shot at 200mm 1/10 of course i never shoot under those conditions and the photos are by no means keepers with that lens so the shots i have done it with have extremely boring subject matter and are like fences long a soccer field while im goofing around or pics of friends on the sidelines at games, not every single time of course but yea the rule is still there i think it simply might need to be updated a little is all smile.gif

Back on topic: If Canon made a cheap 35mm prime like Nikon does, I'd say go for that. There's a Sigma 30mm that isn't too bad to check out as well if you're looking for a "normal" lens. If you want to stay cheap, the 50mm 1.8 is a good bet.

Thanks for all the options and opinions guys. I am gonna go to my local camera shop and see if I can try out a few lenses and see how the pictures come out, what all I can do with each lens, etc. And to Pentium4 if you really want one I can take one of my larger pictures and get it to your wallpaper res. smile.gif

So if you want to do a lot of low-light shooting, a wide aperture is a must. Sigma 30 f/1.4 is a beautiful lens, but if you want to go wide for your shots, give the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 a look.
