NEED IMMEDIATE HELP! Motherboard only recognizing 8gbs of RAM

Ok, so I just recently purchased another triple channel 6gb kit for my rig. I'm using the EVGA Classified 3 board. Got them today, turned off my pc, installed them, turned it back on. everything seemed fine, until I got into the bios and it only recognized 8gbs of 12! At first I thought it was the new dimms, I took them out, and kept my old ones in there, it read all 6. Removed those six and replaced them with the new ones. All good again. Put them all back again, and again I get the same problem. Is it maybe the black slots (2,4,6)? I mixed the old ones with the new ones, and all worked fine again. They all seem to work fine with no problems in the red slots, but 2 of the black ones seem to not be reading them. I'm really losing it here. I seriously hope I won't have to replace my motherboard, because I just don't have the income for it right now frown.gif.

Have you adjusted the QPI voltage or DRAM voltage settings?

I'm going to be honest, you lost me... I'm still kind of a noob at this. I went to the bios and set everything to default. Nothing, still frown.gif.

Thats your problem. the default QPI voltage (I think your board calls it QPI PLL voltage) is 1.10v. When running 6 dimms, you have to increase that voltage to something like 1.225v - 1.25v so that the on-chip memory controller and operate correctly with the 6 dimms. 6 dimms puts a lot of stress on the memory controller, and unfortunately with each CPUbeing unique, not all CPUs can handle maxed out dimms at the same voltage. But 1.225v seems to work fine.

Kind of afraid of doing this. Don't want to fry my CPU. Where and how exactly can I change to voltages in the BIOS? I have an intel core i7 965 quad core, still at stock settings.

Are they all seated correctly, the 3rd slot from left to me doesnt look completely in. This can cause errors in channels and give wrong specs.

It's the voltage I listed. As for frying the chip, it won't happen. The voltage is safe up to 1.35v before you have to start worrying about anything. And with proper cooling, 1.40v is safe. So 1.225v - 1.25v will do absolutely no harm.

I kind of lost you; did you try using the black slots only?

Also in that pic some of them don't seem to be all the way in there... sometimes RAM needs quite a bit of force to go all the way down

If it still doesn't work properly after that, raise your QPI voltage. Or you could try raising QPI first. doesn't really matter lol
