Gaming Rig... LGA1155 would be your best bet. Ivy bridge is around the corner. LGA2011 is just too much money for what it's worth IMO. I don't even know why Intel even sells the 2011 Socket as a Gaming platform. It was originally made for High-Performance Workstations. If you want that much ram then just use 4 8GB sticks in a 1155 Board. I Don't know the point of using 64 GB of ram.

LGA2011 is the top end gaming platform because it has the PCI-E bandwidth to do 4 card GPU setups.

The point of 64 GB of ram is that you can run programs off a ramdisk or use a ramcache.

What is a ramdisk anyways? I've seen the term on OCN a few times. Sounds like turning excess RAM into a type of SSD. Am I close?

Exactly right! Its not worth it though.. i mean the added cost of 2011 + extra ram would be more then a decent SSD.. I'd stick to 16GB ram on 1155 + SSD. thumb.gif

128GB would be my suggestion, but a 64gb crucial would do the job wink.gif

A ramdisk is an order of magnitude faster than even the fastest SSD. I'm not saying it's a reason to buy X79, i'm just saying that high end is high end and has some benefits not available to mainstream platforms.

I know, i experimented with a 1GB partition with 200mb of files. It's nice, but an SSD is still plenty fast for an OS + Programs if you ask me..
It'd be nice, but you're also limited with 32GB (maybe 48GB?) if you go that route.. Where as the premium you're paying for an SSD is alot less and a more noticeable difference.

Just putting more realistic suggestions on the forums, as i don't think many people would like for fork out that much for an x79 with all that ram tongue.gif
