Reccomend a camera for my sister.

Thread Starter
So my sister wants a new camera.
Budget: £300 ($500)
She will be using this camera mainly for taking pictures of her baby, and for holiday etc.
She wants something reliatevely small, and light as she needs some portability.
Any recommendations?

Is she explicitly looking for a point-and-shoot? If so, Canon S95/S100 on that budget.

Not really, she is willing to consider all options.

Well, define "portablity", then. Can she deal with the bulk of even a consumer DSLR? Does she want something with interchangeable lenses?

She might be able to. And tbh she will probably not need something with interchangable lenses.
Do you think that a dslr would be a better option at this price point?

If she doesn't need interchangeable lenses, the only benefit with going to a DSLR will be image quality -- if she doesn't plan on making prints bigger than 4x6", there's no need to deal with the bulk and complexity of a DSLR system. My suggestion stands with an S-series compact, as they have excellent image quality for their size and are extremely portable.

I don't think that kind of budget is "necessary". There's plenty of great point-and-shoot around 200$ that will do the job. 500$ will buy you a budget DSLR kit but results are not that great, and bulky, and just not suited in my opinion for quick grab and shot of cute babies wink.gif. I personally grab my brand new Elph 300 HS for these situation, cheap and fast (except for burst shot, better with video).
