Would a single OC'ed 7970 be faster than a 5970? - Page 6

10 FPS difference in Metro 2033 if I got the 7970 according to the benchmarks above. I just tested it and got 35fps average on max settings.

Amazing that the 5970 is still that fast actually being 2 generations behind.

Not up to date with how often ATI and/or Nvidia releases new series cards. I got my 5970 a couple years ago, so I guess every year a new series will be released. Don't know when the 7xxx series came, so based on that when do you think the 8xxx series will be revealed?

A 10FPS increase is hard to justify, although i'd really only be spending $150 for the upgrade after selling my card, so it is an upgrade afterall, but any ideas on when the next card and/or series of cards is coming out that will top the 7970 would be great if anyone knows. Then I will just have to think

"If you have a 3.0 card, it will NOT run in a 2.0 slot. Only a 3.0"

Referring to PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0. I believe the 7970 is a PCI-E 3.0. This isn't true is it? The 7970 will still run in a PCI-E 2.0 slot, no?

And AFAIK, PCI-E 3.0 is not any faster than 2.0, except maybe in a CF situation but I haven't seen any benchmarks with CF yet.

No, this is wrong. You can use a 3.0 card with a 2.0 slot. You just won't get the features of a 3.0 slot...

It doesn't matter with the HD 7970, but if the rumours are true, the HD 7990 will run faster in a PCI-E 3.0 slot because of it's much higher speed

Well I decided to wait to upgrade. Keeping the 5970, would only get minor, in the range of 10FPS for most games. The extra VRAM would be nice but can wait since i've been playing mostly SWTOR lately.

Going to upgrade when the 8xxx series comes out or something worth upgrading for from Nvidia. Or when the 7970 price drops and I can CF them. Also going to pick up a new mobo and an ivy bridge when the time comes.

ATM there is less than a 1% performance between PCI 3 and PCI 2 atm because GPUs don't use the entire bandwith in PCI 2 atm. On a side note, PCI-E is all backwards compatable to PCI-E 1.

It'll be pretty damn funny if the GTX 680 is faster than the HD 7970 in proportion to the GTX 580 and HD 6970

Wasnt there like a 15% difference and the 580 cost a fair bit more?
