DDR4 CPU or mobo?

Thread Starter
Wondering if, let's say manufacturers release DDR4 this year, is it possible to use it with current CPU (ie LGA1155) with a mobo supporting it?
Or it is all about the CPU supporting this? Just wondering if it could also be possible haswell support it. 2015 sounds like a long time until the new architecture (skylake) is released.

Note: DDR4 should be released in 2013 or 2014 more likely (and possibly this year but chance are very low).

Looking at the history of memory, it's never been compatible when switching generations, I don't see it being compatible - its not CPU incompatibility usually as there were LGA 775 motherboards that had ddr3 support. I don't see ddr4 being released any time too soon as they haven't even optimized for ddr3 yet - just my 2 cents though

I sorta agree with Apple but if they made a board for it i think it would be ok...(Thinking like this because of the fact that LGA 775 has a few boards that can do ddr3 but i think it was capable due to the fact of the north bridge being present).

But SB has the IMC integrated right so wouldnt that make it incapable with anything other than ddr3?

I think the IMC on the CPU can only support DDR3.

Yeah. I am pretty sure Sandy Bridge and all current cpu's wouldn't be compatible with ddr4 as their IMC is for ddr3. They would have to add an IMC for ddr4 like the Phenom II's which have both ddr2 and ddr 3 IMC's.

Sigh, well I guess I will have to wait to 2015 until I can upgrade, looking at intel roadmap, haswell isn't planned to supporting DDR4 -____-

Yea this is exactly why I was asking this. They have DDR4 module ready since 2010-2011. There was some rumours there was some manufacturing problems this is why it was delayed.

Ddr4? I'm waiting for DDR-X modules devil.gif... Lol

@OP
I think I'll be waiting a wile... Speeds doubled around 7months ago... Probably mid 2014 would be my guess for first ddr4 mobos... Also, with the way intel is designed ATM they only support ddr3... The reason 775 could use either was because it was all handled by the nb smile.gif... Also, they may jut skip ddr4 and go straight to ddr5 because they already have the technology down on the GPUs... Just my 2cents.gif

Zero point in waiting for DDR4.

This is true.

DDR4 will almost certainly require new CPUs and new sockets.

LGA 775 chips didn't have an integrated memory controller, so memory support was limited by the chipset. There were DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 LGA-775 chipsets.

On the AMD side of things, AM3 CPUs have both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers, so when placed in an AM2+ socket board, they can use DDR2 memory.

GDDR5 isn't DDR5. It's closely related to DDR3.
