Sleeving Question

Hey guys,

With paracord, do you guys really only use one piece for one wire? The wires on fans like Yates are so small, that I'd think you could fit a whole 3pin in there (have not yet received my purchased paracord, so bear with me). Or am I wrong, and are the sleeving very small?

What's the rough diameter of the paracord?

Rough diameter is 1/8", usually good enough for an 18AWG wire (likely with a small fraction left over)

You could probably get it over all 3 wires in a fan wiring (or for that matter all of the wires in a USB header, though I haven't tried either), but your real issue will be that it will not stretch over the header, so you either have to remove the header, or cut and re-solder the wires.

Couldn't one just pop the header off (not exactly on the USB, but on the fan header)?

Has anyone sleeved a full 3pin fan cable with paracord, or is everyone doing one of each.. which sounds unlikely.

Majority of people use paracord to sleeve all three fan wires into one sleeve. Also, you can take the connector off to sleeve the wires.

That's what I was looking for.

Yeah, I know about the connector.
Thanks.
For everything beside the fan wires, though, it's sleeve per wire, right?

Yes, it is usually one wire per sleeve. For sata cables and internal usb cables you can use sata sleeving like the ones you get from mdpc-x as it is larger.

That's what I meant. Just pop off the connector (after writing down what pin goes where) and sleeve from there. You could probably do the exact same thing with the USB header. You may have to split the wires (pull them apart from one another) to get them all to fit, but they may. I intend on trying.

That's my plan, though I may split it up and go with 2 sets of 2 wires for my PWM fans. My mobo has all PWM headers, so I want to (probably totally unnecessarily) get all PWM fans when I build my desk and computer cabinet.

This. I just bought my paracord and I've been sleeving the last few days. Hands hurt like crap but it all looks good.
