SLI temps

I will be upgrading to SLI gtx 460s in a few months, and really wanted to know how much of a difference in temps I would get.

Right now idle is around 23-25.
Furmark 5 mins is 53-54, but constant

I just tested and put in a physx card under the 460, just to test what temps I would get if something blocked it.
I have one open space in between cards, it's not sandwiched. rolleyes.gif

After the same test, idle got about 29-31, load 56-57

The physx was an evga 9500gt 512 (awesome card back than) and it's really small, so if I did actually put in a full sized 460, it would block more airflow, thus creating higher temps.
So does anybody have the same setup? I could push the other 460 down another slot to a x4, but that would impact 5-10% performance. IDK I guess I would have to try once I get the card.

SO how much of a temp increase would I see with SLI 460s?


Any tips to improve airflow?
I could put in fans behind it?

Well with my second GTX 480 the second card would get 9c hotter than the first GTX 480 so it mostly depends on PCI-E slots how wide they are and the airflow of your case also.

I have 2 MSI GTX570 TFIIs in SLI with one slot in-between, and during full load my top card runs ~10 C hotter than the bottom card. I would expect you would see a similar increase. It also depends on whether you have reference blower coolers, or like in my case, aftermarket coolers that dump the heat into the case.

You have one empty slot space between the top and the bottom cards. This is good.

 

I have a few suggestions regarding factors affecting the temp of the top card:-

 

1)  If the top card has traditional cooling design (ie front single centrifugal fan intake and 100% rear exhaust), then it is usually less affected by the presence of a card underneath.

 

2)  If the bottom card uses non traditional cooling design (ie exhausting inside the case), then the exhaust is very likely to be recirculated by the top card's intake fan(s) to a certain degree.

So, using a traditional cooling design card as the bottom card should also be considered.

 

3)  In SLI, the top card is usually connected to the monitor, making it the master card. As such, it could be one or two degrees higher due to being the master.

So, consider connecting the monitor to the bottom card.

 

4)  Also, consider setting the bottom card as the dedicated Physx card to move this load away from the top card, making it less hot.  This is, of course, only relevant when running Physx games.

It looks everybody gets about 10C difference.

Also how much does it rise thought from single? I mean its 10 different, but comparing to single setup, how different is it than?

So after market coolers are worse, since they dump the heat back in? thinking.gif

1)  Asus GTX460 DirectCU 1GB has non traditonal cooling design.

 

2)  The 10C difference is also, more or less, applicable to comparing a single card setup vs the top card of a dual card setup with an empty slot space in between.

 

The 3 major factors affecting temp of the top card are:-

a. empty slot space between the 2 cards

b. type of cooling used

c. airflow management of the case

 

3)  Aftermarket coolers are not necessarily worse.  But, IMHO, a top card with aftermarket cooler (ie non traditional style) is more sensitive to the spacing between the 2 cards than a top card with traditional cooling style.

 

Let me make up a hypothetical example to illustrate:-

Card A with traditional cooling loads at 70C by itself. When another card is placed underneath with no empty space, temp becomes 85C. When there is one empty slot spacing, temp becomes 80C.

 

Card B with aftermarket cooling (eg your Asus DirectCU) loads at 55C by itself. When another card is placed underneath with no empty space, temp becomes 75C. When there is one empty slot spacing, temp becomes 70C.

 

Absolute temp wise, aftermarket cooling wins. But traditional cooling is less susceptible (ie relative jump is smaller) to the spacing change.

 

4)  See the diagram below for my brief analysis of case airflow inside your HAF 912

-the one slot empty space between the cards will give the top card good breathing in room

-some of the exhaust of the bottom card will unavoidably be drawn by the intake fan of the top card. (ie the orange arrow) if it has the non traditional cooling style.  However, if it has traditional cooling style, all of its hot air will be exhausted to the rear.

 

-Perhaps consider adding a side panel fan to provide additional intake fresh air for the 2 cards.  This is becoming more relevant than a single card setup because the bottom card now, kind of, block the front coming fresh air reaching the top card from the bottom direction.  So, you wish to provide air from another direction, namely from the side direction.

Yes the Haf 912 proves to have very good airflow.
I do have a 140mm on the side for intake, and it is positioned by CM directly where the two cards would be, which is very nice.
