Why would skyrim do this?

When i install my GTS 450, skyrim defaults to high, and on my 465 it defaults to medium? Why would it do that? xD

Don't worry about it, just crank it up!

My guess is that it has something to do with the power-saving options and the fact that the card is 'detected' when it's in 2d mode ...

I think there's probably a very small, quick workload sent to the card during the detection process, and the speed at which it gets done informs the app 'how fast' the card is.

Now, when the 465 gets sent the workload, because it's a more powerful card, it either doesn't budge from 51MHz, or it only powers up to low-power 3d (405MHz). But the less powerful 450 'sees' that load as 'more work' for itself (relative to it's actual power), and thus fully powers up to 3d clocks, and ends up doing the work more quickly ... so Skyrim 'thinks' it's a more powerful card than the 465 because of it.

That's just my guess though. I certainly wouldn't worry about it ... my SLI 470's don't even get detected as 'Ultra', and they can max this game out no problem, so ...

If its anything like other Bethesda games its merely a list of GPUs. Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV would "detect" your video card and make suggested settings, but as time went by and new cards came out the game didn't recognize it would say so and default to medium settings (even if the card was monstrously powerful).

Lol, this is funny. My 5770 got detected to Ultra High the first time I ran the game.

Also distinctly possible. However, both the 465 and 450 are quite old relative to the game ... so it would seems odd for this to be 'the explanation' for the particular scenario at hand
