Windows 8 cpu temp twice as hot then linux

Thread Starter
I have an old HP compaq 6715b laptop that I had dual booted with Window 8 and Backtrack 5. About a week ago I noticed that while in Windows 8 about every 30 seconds my fan would ramp up for about 15 seconds and then go back and continue to do this every 30 seconds.

I installed core temp and noticed that my cpu would hit 85C and then the fan would ramp up and take it to 75c. When the fan went back to normal it only took about 20 seconds to reach 85c again causing the fan to ramp up again, this was all while idling.

I pulled it apart thinking it was just dirty and to put new TIM on. After doing this I noticed that it still idled hot, about 79C. So I booted linux since there is no temp in the BIOS and while in linux I run the acpi -t command and only get between 40-44 degrees celsius during idle. Also the fan never ramps up.

Is it possible that Windows 8 just has some type of bug causing this, or could it actually run this much hotter?

I'm not sure mate but I've noticed when I run a program in Win 8 I get a bsod so it could be related to the issue. It only happens as soon as my cpu usage goes up which would drive up my temps. I'll have to check when I get on my Win 8 test machine.

Sounds like a win8 bug. Try error reporting.

Well I just rebooted into windows 8 and now it's idling at 47C, so I don't know what the heck is going on. Thanks for the quick reply Bigm and Buttermilk at 2:30 am lol. I guess i'll just have to keep monitoring my temp when I boot up and if it's hot just reboot and hope it drops again lol.

I haven't tried Win 8 yet but my suggestion would be there is a program running in the background? Then again, you did use an old laptop, so maybe the CPU is struggling to handle the new OS. I'm not entirely sure...

My mac always ran hotter in iwndows than linux.... I am going to assume that is because linux is so much lighter to begin with. But like others have said it could be a bug as well.

Now that I think about it, it most likely is a bug and my pc is shutting itself down so it doesn't "overheat". Especially because it hasn't always done this with Win 8

I had an issue for 64x win XP a while ago where my cpu usage would ramp for no reason. I could watch my windows explorer in task manager cpu usage slowly climb until it would BSOD. I never figured it out but I assume it was a driver problem. Try watching your processes in task manager next time you hear the fan kick in.
