SILENT Bucket Water Cooling!! (BUDGET) - Page 4

post #31 of 38

So I was getting tired of having to get down into my desk to connect and disconnect the Dual Pumps and Fan Power supply, so I came up with this;
2012-02-23202819.jpg

I bought a 6' 3-prong extension cord ($9), and tapped off the Neutral with a Relay ($8).

2012-02-23202945.jpg

The trigger requires very little amperage (10mA), and has a wide range for Voltage, making it very versatile.

2012-02-23204317.jpg

Finished product. Now it all conveniently turns on and off along with my computer.

2012-02-23210315.jpg

These 4 120mm fans have a decent CFM rating and together run at a modest 5.3 Watts. I used an old 12V power supply off of an old westel modem

If you want to, Hayden makes oil coolers that are alot like the one you bought but they make them usually alot larger. You might want to look into those. Not sure how much more efficient it will get vs running anything different than a regular more expensive water cooling rad's for PC's tho so I dunno.

Pretty slick idea there with the ssr and psu. For safety and aesthetics, maybe house the ssr and possibly the psu in one of those plastic project boxes. You can get those at Radio Shack.

Here's a pic of the heater cores. I was experimenting with these so just heated and slipped the tubing over the copper ftgs. You can solder barb ftgs and paint them up all pretty if you want. These have quite a bit more surface area than a trans cooler. They are very low restriction to water flow and don't need powerful fans. I highly recommend these vs the overpriced rads. Autozone or just about any auto parts store should have these in stock. Summit racing has them too. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PLI-399078/
