The first PC game i've ever played was Half Life 1, and I was really young at the time too. So the whole series really sticks in your head if you grew up with it. Some of my friends don't like it but they do appreciate what it did for the PC community of making mods.

He didn't say competetive FPS gaming community. tongue.gif

Not that I would attribute it all to one game anyway...

The original Half-Life is the game that got me into First Person Shooters on the PC. I remember playing the demo on a friends computer, my computer at the time was laughable. The game brought you into it like no other at the time. It helped me transition from an elusive RTS gamer into the realm of PC FPS. Counter Strike, with the help of Rainbow Six Rouge Spear, brought me into online shooters. I remember going over to a friends house every weekend and playing Counter Strike and Day of Defeat for hours non-stop. There was always a continuous flow of user created content and mods to keep my appetite suppressed. Scientist Slaughter House was one of those delectably entertaining mods. I remember the day I recieved my first computer capable of playing Half-Life, it was like 5 Christmas mornings at once. I immediately loaded up Team Fortress Classic and subjected the other players to GIBS with the sniper rifle, what fun times. I also remember playing the Counter-Strike Source beta, being blown away by the new engine, and waiting for HL2 to come out. I was an hour late for school the day HL2 came out. It was awesome seeing classic mods come back to life on the Source Engine. Source has had a good ride up until about 2 years ago. It's kind of dated now, making me crave a new engine and the revival of some classic games. Half-life isn't just a game, it's a state of mind, it's something that grew with the gamer, you needed to be part of it from the beginning to understand it in its fullest extent. Half-life will always have a place in my heart. I really hope Valve releases a new engine in the near future, I need a new fix.

Gabe looks like some sort of mad German scientist with that beard. But on a serious note I love Gabe Newell and his philosophy on games and the industry.

wouldn't a long development hurt the game? wouldn't longer dev time lead to increased expectations? We all thought DNF would be great but it was crap.
