Really though, all valve needs to say right now is "yes, we're working on Ep 3 - it will come - we dont know when". Just at least confirm that you're doing something.

You keep bringing up strawman arguments that have no bearing on what I said. Just because other makers/developers/whatever do it doesn't mean Valve should be allowed to without taking heat. With the praise that gets heaped on them you would think they'd be perfect, but they are not. You have yet to show how anything I've said is untrue. Also, if you're taking that long to beat the HL2 episodes then you are ridiculously slow, so you can't use that as a point either. It takes a couple hours tops.

Thank you for that.

I didn't say they were perfect. L4D2 and Ricochet are examples of where Valve didn't do too well on, (even Gabe made the comment on how terrible Ricochet was) not to mention the whole HL2 leak, leaking unreleased content and the whole Source code. One of the reasons why Steam was created in the first place. With the way I was understanding you, it made it sound like Valve is the bad guy for all of gaming, hence why I threw Activison in there, cause they're the best example. And those times were just the general time, I didn't say it takes me that long. And if I do, so what? I actually enjoy my games and take my time with them. I don't rush them and try to beat them as fast as I can. Doing that, you miss the little things, like the Lambda caches in HL2 and EP1 and the antlion nest caches in EP2.

Anyways, EP3, or as it's actually going to be called, Half-Life 3 is being worked on. I don't know if you guys think the little hints (t-shirts, Gabe's computer screen in his knife pic, a majority of Valve's devs have nothing lined up) are enough proof that HL3 is being worked on. It may not be as public as many people think they should be, but all I know is that it's being worked on, just "it's done when it's done" as someone said.

To be honest I don't see why people obsess over valve games in general. Portal and Portal 2 were entertaining but it wasn't like OMG LULZ GLADDOS/WEASLY U SO FUNNY like I see so many posts make it out to be. Left for dead is pretty much the same to me too. Its good for like a few levels but I don't see the obsession people have.

Well, there's your problem. Orange Box on anything but PC sucks. HL2 was absolutely astonishing. One of the best games ever, hands down. And that's pretty much fact, not opinion. HL2E2 was also phenomenal. The end fight with the Striders made me yell curse words many a time.

I don't know about it being a fact, but I as well completely agree with the fact that HL2 was amazing. Easily one of the best single players still today, in fact I go back to play it every once in awhile to remember how good games actually were at one point.

Games now days, are all about graphics. Everything else is put on the back burner for the most part. Obviously there are exceptions, but they're rare.

@stargate125645

Just so you know the Source engine is modular and very versatile, in your first post you complained on how the engined was crap. It's personal opinion on how a game looks and tbh its not as bad as some of the stuff thats being pushed out recently. CoD is still on the Quake III Team Arena engine iirc, and alot are on the Unreal 3 which is quite old in itself.

As someone said earlier Source is being modularly updated along with every new game release valve makes, HDR post-processing and larger texture sizes etc. It's getting better and is honestly in league with every other game thats out there (except BF3, but thats a resource hog -_-) like the other guy before posted about activision, so I don't see why your making a fuss over it

what happened to episodic releases? valve whet our appetite with really close yearly releases between hl2:ep1 and hl2:ep2 then everyone expected hl2:ep3 in 2008, then 2009, then 2010, then hl went completely off the radar.

gabe, you had the answer to fixing the problem with developing a lengthy monolithic single game, why'd you shift your philosophy back to the old way of doing things?

That's completely possible even right now. The textures that Valve uses for the cinematic trailers are ridiculously large. I know that the TF2 prop textures from the videos that are available in Hammer are about 100MB a piece, depending on the prop. Main stream textures though, they are at 1024x1024 at 1/4 resolution in the game. Even a 2048x2048 texture would look great at 1/8 resolution to keep with the current sizing. 4k textures would be too big, although it's still possible to add them.

DX11 on the other hand, would have to be put in by Valve cause they only have access to the complete Source code. Modders only have access to the 2009 version of Source.
