By the way, from what I heard Battlefield 3 uses 4 cores, however it doesn't seem to take advantage of them, it simply shares the load between the 4 as if it were 2 cores at full (or near full) load. Can anyone confirm this?

If you GPU is the bottleneck, then your cores will be receiving less load whereas the GPU will be @100%
If your CPU is the bottleneck, the CPU will be @100% and the GPU not being used completely.

The higher the resolution, the bigger the difference between GPU and CPU load (more GPU load is necessary)

Yeah, I just did a test with Battlefield 3 (lowest settings) and CPU is always at 100%, so clearly it's too much for it. Average for GPU I'd say it's about 90%, you can see for yourselves if you're curious: LINK.

CPU bottleneck doesn't seem that bad, though, and I recently found out that it runs pretty much smooth (45+fps) with post procesing AA on low; with it on high I used to get terrible performance drops (even if fps were about the same), which is weird since there shouldn't be any noticable different between low and high, at least laccording to nVidia's Tweak Guide (guess you can't trust their results if you have an AMD card). I also downgraded AF from 16x to 8x, but I don't think that mattered.

Anyway, I still think 150€ is too much for that CPU. I think I'll just wait until Ivy comes out... hopefully SB prices will go down and then I will upgrade mobo and memory too, or maybe I can get a Q9550 cheaper from some other dude. So yeah, I think I'll sit this one out. My E8400 is still pretty decent @3.8GHz.

I have a E0 q9550 @ 4.08ghz 1.28v on my secondary rig with a gtx465 (overclocked to faster then gtx470 level) and I have no problem getting 100% load on the gpu for every game. BF3 plays at 60fps @ 1080p with high settings no AA. Also for benchmarks It comes out to be around a stock 2500k in terms of performance. I can get 4.25ghz (500fsb) out of my q9550 but needs 1.4v and the hyper 121+ isnt up to the task, but a H50 is.

Though for that price I would not get it, I wouldn't pay anything over $180 for that chip.

I think it's closer to a 2400 stock than a 2500k. I believe the 2500k is still very much superior, especially if you compare them both @4GHz, and we all know the 2500k can go higher than that.

My mobo and RAM ar weak anyway, so upgrading everything will be pretty cool for me. Until then, my E8400 will have to do the job. tongue.gif

well at 4.25ghz it can score 5.16 in cinebench what is about the same as a i5 2500(non K). Plus in gaming with a single gpu you wouldnt notice much of a differance anyway. Even a Quad Core Phenom II OCed @ 4ghz would have no problems running a gpu at 100%. Only a few games would see real benefit, like starcraft 2, BFBC2, dirt 2/3, and other cpu heavy games. Though in 90% of benchmarks the scores will be about the same if using the game graphics card as long as no bottleneck is taking place. And because a q9550 is faster then a phenom II of equal clock it will have no problem playing games.

Ram also doesnt really mater, Even going ddr3 would gain you at best 2-3fps
Though your board doesnt have VRM cooler ether, though being a p35 chipset isnt all bad. You could probably hit 3.8-4ghz as only a slight voltage bump will be needed but dont aim higher then that

I support your decision. That's what I would do.

Do you know what else I would do? Get more out of that e8400.
Are you sure you can't get a 4.0 / 4.2 / 4.4ghz out of it with that cooler you have?

Well, I already posted about it not being able to reach 4GHz, which is a shame, really. People said it was my memory, but I don't know, it might be the fact that it's a C0 revision and my mobo isn't that good for that kind of FSB... one thing I could try if it's the memory is using just 2 sticks since now I have 4 and it could mean any of them is unstable @890MHz.

150€ That is way to expensive for that processor. Tell him you want it for 140-150 USD as that is what price they are going here.

Yes, I understand, but in Europe things are simply more expensive since the conversion for prices is about 1.4 USD/1 EUR or even 1/1 in some cases, and that isn't the real market value. 150€ would be $200 right now on the market, so yes, it would be ridiculously expensive in America if you convert it that way.
