ok, my systems is old enough now that i thought i would try to overclock it to get a bit more power for playing Battlefield3

I have dug around the net, and found a number of listed settings... none seem to work. the PC wont post, so i have to reboot and try again.

From what i have learned so far, i think its my RAM thats limiting the OC. Hopefully someone can explain/help a little smile.gif

I did at one point get it to boot, and it said it was running a 3.76Ghz which would be fine with me, but, being new, i didnt know if i had something set wrong and could screw up my pc smile.gif

everything out there seems to be pushing the FSB to 445... but i had to drop to 415

Yes, your memory is very likely limiting your OC to anything less than 4GHz. I have an E8400 and also 800MHz RAM and I can get it up to 3.8GHz. Anything higher is unstable.

Try 423 bus speed and a 2x memory multiplier, this is what I have set in order to acheive 3.8GHz. See how high you need to set your vcore to get it stable.

By the way, if 3.8GHz is stable I don't think it's worth it to buy 1066 RAM just to get ~200MHz extra clock speed, unless it's basically an exchange for your current 800 RAM.

400 FSB wall, highly common, 45nm Core2 CPU's.

Set your memory to go 1:2 with the FSB @ 1.9v

I've had cheap dell memory go 1000 @ 1.975v. I don't see why those OCZ sticks can't go any higher.

... wait... which one is for setting memory to 2x? lol
when i tried to use 421 for the FSB it wouldnt boot....
is that when i need to up the voltage? (maybe 1.35?)

gotta explain it in dumb speak lol - i can program in 5 diff languages, but its been MUCH too long since i have played with anything like this. I built my system, but had help from the folks at tom's hardware as to what to pair to what smile.gif

i dont have plans to get new ram smile.gif but i was wondering if pulling the Wintec ram out and just keeping the OCZ hyper 4GB ram would allow a higher speed? (or is it pointless?)

You're hitting 3.7 @ 1.3x? HAX! Remember it's a 45nm CPU so max voltage will be 1.45 vs 1.55. Jump the clutch straight to 1.4, see if you boot then. Let's make sure your cooling is adequate though.

Yes pull the wintec for your overclocking session. It's probably having trouble keeping up with the OCZ. How high can your multi go? (ratio)

ok.. i noticed when i set the RAM to DDR2-800.. as i raise the FSB the ram changes?? do i need to set the FSB to 423, then adjust the ram back down close to 800?

i feel like i am learning to speak Chinese smile.gif lol

Let the RAM oc as well. The memory controller will throw a fit if you try to run such a high FSB and low DRAM speed. Just set your RAM's voltage to 1.975 and let it do whatever it wants.

If you can adjust the CPU ratio you're in luck. If not, then it looks like you've hit the FSB wall.

Yep just leave it auto. And keep pushing! thumb.gif Eventually you'll hit an OC where you can't even go 1 increment higher. Means you've maxed out it's potential until you start feeding serious voltage into it. Which is a whole different ballgame.
