I agree. smile.gif

In all honesty, Core 2 Duo/Quads are over priced. For about the same cost as a Core 2 Duo, you can get a AMD Phenom II x4 quad that you can put in a motherboard that uses DDR3, SATA III and USB3. You can't find a socket 775 board that does this. And, the x4 will outperform the Duo, as mentioned.

It was a challenge to build a complete system equal to the barebones system not inferior to it. Hell ill see the OP a p4 ee 3.6 ghz dell for 25 dollars with a 6800gt. lol

Not to burst your bubble, but you are going to have to run Linux or fork over more dough for a windows copy.sad-smiley-002.gif

Windows 8 Preview for the win! At least to hold you over until you can afford the real thing. wink.gif

My brother's friend recently made a new PC and is running it in lieu of buying Windows 7, and he says it works well enough. Games run fine at least.

Hang in there guys, I'm working on an alternate config while in my graphics design class..... I'm ahead several lessons so it's justified!

Actual supercombo initial cost: $300.76 counting shipping costs

Costa after rebates: $254.76-256.76 shipped with no-wait rebate option selected (deducts $1-2 from each rebate but rebates arrive in 2 weeks instead of 8-10)

My competing option:

5008474183-orig.jpg

Seagate 500GB 7200RPM HDD - $75 shipped [Amazon]

PSU - not required (you have one)

PSU incl. resale value on Craigslist - -$15
GPU - You again will have one

$264 shipped, no rebates involved.

The x4 631 is a 32nm Phenom II labelled as Athlon II and sold on socket Fm1.  It's actually really good; it overclocks well without raising the voltage (some have reported up to 3.6Ghz) or undervolts well, and consumes less power.  I'd recommend it over the 955.

I consider the balance to be superior noting the lack of rebates.  If NCIX still had the deal for the $60 500GB Hitachi HDD on things could be better.  When I get home, I'll be looking for better HDD deals...

Class wasted, worth it thumb.gif

This! The barebones kit doesn't come with an os. What is the exact model of your old comp, might be able to salvage the hdd/os out of it.

My attempt to better your barebones kit:

Case/odd combo $50 shipped
ASUS P8P67-M PRO $70 shipped (will allow you to get a K processor in the future and overclock
Celeron G530 $46 - these do pretty well actually (Passmark comparison andCeleron review
Geil DDR3 - 1600 (2x2) $26 shipped
pc-power and cooling psu - free
750gb WD Caviar Green hdd $60 shipped

Total before GPU is $252 shipped thumb.gif This will at least be even in performance to the barebones and has a very good mobo for future upgrades as well as quality high speed dual channel ram.
It's so little!

Ok its a fm1 socket with no upgrade options. A processor with no l3 cache, cheap memory , cheap case. That build is fail also.

And the Celeron G530 is just fail. it does have upgrade options but hes getting married he will be broke till the end of time.

Wow. You guys are super! I could not get a rig under $300.

The AMD FM1 would be tempting. Overclock FTW!
