umm ... so *Anything* I put inside a "Shared_" folder will automatically be availabe throughout the network .. then I map that folder into a network drive on my main rig ... pretty easy . biggrin.gif

Yep, that's how I have mine, here's a quick run down of my shared folders:

158

Drives:

C: Boot drive 160 GB HDD
D: Mirrored 2x 1 TB HDD
E: 2 TB HDD
F: 500 GB HDD
G: 60 GB SSD

I've never used FreeNAS before so I'm not sure what it supports for sharing and what file system it uses.

As for Apache, It's generally recommended to run Apache or and web server from within a VM. Personally I have VirtualBox with an Ubuntu 11.10 install running Apache2, FTP, etc.

I guess , I would start with WHS 2011 then .. And use its Remote Web Access function then , as I can see that it updates the IP automatically in case it got changed . thumb.gif

Thanks smile.gif

WHS 2011 includes a "Connector" software that you can install on your computer that allows you to access the Dashboard and do general administration like manage back-ups, create/modify/delete users and shared folders, and advanced admin stuff if you install "Advanced Admin Console".

What I did for simplicity is went to the network browser in Windows on each of my computers, and just created a shortcut to my server on my desktop, so it shows up as "Shortcut to CHAR" and you can just right-click on that and select either "Open" or "Connect with Remote-desktop".

If you want to use the remote web service though, you will need to set up your router for port-forwarding so you may as well set up a DHCP rule for your server so it always gets the same IP address.

In regards to the remote web access itself, you just sign-in with a Windows Live account and you get a free .homeserver.com. It uses HTTPS to connect so it's secure and will automatically update if you have a dynamic IP address from your ISP. It might not take instantly though, I think I had an hour of downtime once while at work because my IP address changed.
