Who Else Thinks PC Gaming Is a Pain?

Thread Starter
Well I'll start off by saying that I'm very new to the PC gaming scene. I built my computer in October 2011 (when I joined OCN) and I got my graphics card shortly after that and began gaming. I must say, I am now about ready to throw in the towel. I got into PC gaming because I know there are so many more possibilities (better visuals, modding eyefinity ect) but now I'm sick of it.

The thing I'm most tired of? Steam. I absolutely detest Steam. I'm sure most people like it (and I probably would too if it wasn't so poorly executed). I have very poor internet so I can't play online games. I have come to accept that. But thanks to Steam I can't play offline games either. Genius idea. If I can't log into steam, I can't play games. And if my games aren't updated, I can't play either. But even if I had good internet, it wouldn't let me play outdated games. Like Skryim. That game is unplayable with eyefinity unless you have a fix for it. The fix I was using for a while was great. But then Skryim gets updated (thank you Steam) and the fix doesn't work. No more Skyrim. Games just don't work well with eyefinity period though and that is like the biggest reason I wanted to get into PC gaming. I don't see why game developers can't throw in eyefinity support really quick. If the consumers can modify the game to work with eyefinity, game developers can put it in from the beginning.

Next I'd like to talk about crossfire support. I haven't used crossfire much as I've only had it a couple days, but honestly, do any games work with crossfire? I haven't seen any instance where it actually helps. More often than not it hurts performance. Once again, if people can mod a game to work with crossfire why can't it be implemented properly from the beginning? I knew GTA had poor crossfire support but I didn't think it was as bad as it is. It was a struggle to even get to play GTA with crossfire and when I do get it to work I'm barely seeing any performance increase. And I lose all of my in game sound. I don't understand how that happens but its ridiculous.

I really miss console gaming, because I know that when I turn on my Xbox I will be playing a game properly almost instantly. I think the cons for PC gaming really outweigh the pros. If everything worked perfectly I would be more than satisfied but it doesn't. It's not like I'm doing any hardcore modding either, just adding hardware to my computer.

I would like to hear other people's input on this. I don't want to start a flame war or anything, I just really want to discuss this and see what others have to say.

Well, you have to admit that you've seen only a narrow portion of what PC gaming is - you use Eyefinity, and all the problems that come with it, you use Steam and all the problems that come with it...

Ditch Steam, it really sucks IMO. Just buy or download your games the regular way smile.gif

1. Stop playing console ports. Can't do anything about Skyrim, however, sorry about that.

2. Why build such a nice PC if you don't/won't invest in a good internet connection?

3. Put steam into offline mode, problem solved.

4. All of your problems are easily fixed if you would have posted about them here. If you aren't willing to put the time and effort into building, maintaining your PC and the games you play then maybe PC gaming isn't for you.

I've tried ditching steam but I can't escape it. I bought the physical copy of skyrim and the first thing it does when I try to install it is connect to steam.

Wonderful my drivers just crashed on my computer. Did I mention I'm tired of that too? Time to do a hard reboot. Again. Here I reply to my thread, on my iPhone.

OP, I think the biggest problem you have there is your internet connection, what do you use? have you not being able to download cfx patches because of your internet?

if you have bad performance in steam because of the internet, you can always play in offline mode. I do that a lot whenever the traffic is heavy

I agree with that crossfire can be a pain sometimes, any multi card solutions have their problems. some games utilize crossfire really well and others are just really bad( like skyrim for me).

It sounds like you jumped straight into the deep and my friend. Eyefinity is known to be a trouble maker and I'm sorry if you where un-prepared for it. As for crossfire yes it to can have its quirks but in most popular games it works very well and gives a very significant boost. Here is a hint get and install radeonPro you can use it to get crossfire working on games that other wise don't use the second card.

Steam and poor internet. Have you tired to configure steams offline mode? It should allow you to play the games that really on steam DRM even when your connection goes down.

Edit: And for the record I like PC gaming even with its slight issues. I'm sure you will to ones you get used to it.

It's where I live. Satellite Internet is all we have. I will be going to college next year so hopefully I won't have to worry about the Internet anymore.

I did have steam in offline mode but I wanted to back up to the steam cloud (silly me) now I'm sol. I can't go into offline mode without being updated and I can't play without being updated. When I am updated I can't play. I'm really in a corner.

Don't tell me I didn't put effort into fixing my games. I have spent more time trying to fix my games than actually playing them. I have asked for help here occasionally and it's always been solved but I know there are something's that just can't be fixed. Like gta crossfire and skyrim Eyefinity. The only fix for skyrim Eyefinity for the latest version doesn't work very well. All I can do is wait.

There are many other digitial distribution services that may not have an all-inclusive client like Steam. TRy Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, and Direct2drive. GOG.com is great for those old school games

You are only as strong as your weakest link. In this case it seems like a good 1/2 of your problems stem from you not wanting to upgrade one core part. it's like if you upgraded form an old honda civic to a new ferarri. you cant use the same cheap gas/oil in your ferrari as you did for your civic. Higher performance equipment needs high performance supplements, too.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't know about your satellite situation.

You are right, university connections are generally much better than what you get home. Even still, your steam wont connect at all? Obviously, your internet does work since you are posting in this thread, but what do you mean you cant update?

Also, you can tell steam to not auto update some games if you right click them in steam -> properties -> updates tab -> do not automatically update this game

As for #4, Porkchop is right. There is a reason there are forum sites like OCN.net, and Google so that you can research the problems yourself or have us help you if your issue hasnt been addressed yet.
