Who Else Thinks PC Gaming Is a Pain? - Page 3

I've been PC gaming for the past decade and I can relate to everything the OP has mentioned.

I took my PC to my nephews once, STEAM refused to let me log in in offline mode. Turns out i had to connect to the internet first, set it to offline mode, then continue from that. Work that one out (Really, wth is the point in it?) It's stupid things like this that encourage piracy.

Additionally, i think Crossfire or any multi-GPU setup is a complete and utter waste of money and time. My first experience with a crossfire setup was with a 3870x2 - which was basically two cores on one card - and i had no end of troubles.

Then i tried a crossfire setup of 4000 series AMD GPU's, similar problems. Many games had bugs and didn't fully utilize the cards, and in some instances gave me worse performance than what a single card would do!

I frequently hear similar stories even of current gen cards. Many years later and still little has changed. Complete waste of money, it's all Epeen only. I wouldn't say bragging about how you've wasted your money is very clever either.

Frankly though, i don't think Console games are any better with their own nice list of bugs and glitches. To top it off, their hardware problems (YLOD, RROD, etc) ...No thanks.

PC's only for me, at least I can fix those. I can also modify games, there's much more freedom on the PC that i would never, ever trade in for a console -- unless it's the really old ones, you know, when consoles worked, and weren't media hubs. NES, SNES, N64, GENESIS, etc tongue.gif

Speaking of which, i better start collecting some of those old consoles. They'll be worth a fortune one day.

you dnt have to use steam for offline gaming, but i agree. execution is TERRIBLE.
on a side note, all multiplayer, console or pc is out for you.

Games that are designed for multiple platforms will suffer in PC. Look at games Blizzard makes. They have no problems. If they did they get patched really fast because they care. The problems is with the Game developers and not PC gaming.

Well you may like Just Cause 2 as it's an open world game. Similar to Saints Row in that's it's story is kind of ajoke but the gameplay is awesome. It's all about destruction on a large scale. It looks better then both those games to as it uses DX10 to the fullest. Really a showpiece type game like Metro or Crysis.

As far as what's coming soon I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 3 and Max Payne.

Well I'll start off by saying that I'm very new to the PC gaming scene. I built my computer in October 2011 (when I joined OCN) and I got my graphics card shortly after that and began gaming. I must say, I am now about ready to throw in the towel. I got into PC gaming because I know there are so many more possibilities (better visuals, modding eyefinity ect) but now I'm sick of it.
The thing I'm most tired of? Steam. I absolutely detest Steam. I'm sure most people like it (and I probably would too if it wasn't so poorly executed). I have very poor internet so I can't play online games. I have come to accept that. But thanks to Steam I can't play offline games either. Genius idea. If I can't log into steam, I can't play games. And if my games aren't updated, I can't play either. But even if I had good internet, it wouldn't let me play outdated games. Like Skryim. That game is unplayable with eyefinity unless you have a fix for it. The fix I was using for a while was great. But then Skryim gets updated (thank you Steam) and the fix doesn't work. No more Skyrim. Games just don't work well with eyefinity period though and that is like the biggest reason I wanted to get into PC gaming. I don't see why game developers can't throw in eyefinity support really quick. If the consumers can modify the game to work with eyefinity, game developers can put it in from the beginning.
Next I'd like to talk about crossfire support. I haven't used crossfire much as I've only had it a couple days, but honestly, do any games work with crossfire? I haven't seen any instance where it actually helps. More often than not it hurts performance. Once again, if people can mod a game to work with crossfire why can't it be implemented properly from the beginning? I knew GTA had poor crossfire support but I didn't think it was as bad as it is. It was a struggle to even get to play GTA with crossfire and when I do get it to work I'm barely seeing any performance increase. And I lose all of my in game sound. I don't understand how that happens but its ridiculous.
I really miss console gaming, because I know that when I turn on my Xbox I will be playing a game properly almost instantly. I think the cons for PC gaming really outweigh the pros. If everything worked perfectly I would be more than satisfied but it doesn't. It's not like I'm doing any hardcore modding either, just adding hardware to my computer.
I would like to hear other people's input on this. I don't want to start a flame war or anything, I just really want to discuss this and see what others have to say.

I agree with alot of your points, the problem here though is that PC gaming can be a pain as it is, throw eyefinity in there and that increases tenfold.

I've been a crossfire user for around 7 months now and have to agree on that front aswell, AMD's incompetence is mind-boggling, take Skyrim for example...have they even fixed that yet?? Loads of other games out there where either the developers havn't bothered or AMD are being incompetent as usual, there were quite a few games that came out late last year which had botched crossfire support and on eyefinity you need all the power you can get.

Adding profiles through Radeonpro works sometimes...and sometimes it dosn't, nonetheless that shouldn't be needed anyway.

All that said however, when it all comes together you cannot beat the pc gaming experience imo, it's whether your willing to put up with all the problems that it will present and with stuff like eyefinity, well, alot of developers either won't bother or there will be underhanded tactics (take Witcher 2 for example, works with Nvidia Surround, but not eyefinity), alot of times hacks will be released for multi-monitor support but again, if you have a game on steam an auto-update could kill the hack and it's back to square one.

Vsync is your friend. you can enable it in most all game's. It will sync your maximum FPS to your monitors refresh rate. Might help out some with the display issue's. On high end system's having to many FPS can degrade performance just as much as having to low a fps.

I had Just Cause on my PS3 (sold)

I liked it but it wasn't as open as GTA. Are there good mods that free it up?

Honestly Eyefinity hasn't been much of an issue for me. Gta works great with it and skyrim did with the fix. Crossfire has been my headache. I'm really hoping the next nvidia cards support 5760x1080 on one card because I'm seriously considering picking up a 680. A 7970 would be nice too but I'm kind of fed up with amd. But I've heard Eyefinity is better than surround. Grah I don't know.

Did you check performance before you started overclocking/unlocking things? I like to let a system run at stock settings for a little bit before adding in overclocking. sucks your having such a hard time with your gaming PC...I love gaming on a PC...I'll never go back to console.

First mistake was going Crossfire ditch those cards for a single 7970 and 80% of the tweaking is gone

Yes, multi-gpu setups suck. Always stick with a powerful single gpu setup and you'll be fast without any problems. Also, gaming on a PC without a good internet connection? You are missing out on a lot.
