Question on PSU Cable Extensions

Thread Starter
Hello all, I just had a quick question if anyone was willing to indulge...

I'm getting ready to extend / sleeve my cables and the thing that I haven't been able to completely figure out is is using two different types of wire will do anything- undesirable.

I have a 750W Seasonic modular PSU that uses 18 AWG stranded wire. And in an effort to practice soldering I purchased 18 AWG solid copper wire from Radio Shack. So my question is: If I extend my cables with solid copper wire instead of stranded, will there be a difference?

My plan (unless told otherwise) is to cut the wire somewhere in the middle, but about 4-6 inches of the copper between it, solder the two wires together, heatshrink and sleeve.

Any info would be most appreciated. Thank you smile.gif

using solid will be just fine. Stranded is just used because its easy to bend and have it go places you need it to reach.

I think solid may give you some issues hiding cables.

Well the main one I've been wanting to extend is the 8-Pin connector to the CPU. I just recently got a full sized tower and the PSU cables struggle to get all the way to the top of the mobo. I've had to extend it over top which looks ugly and I think messes with the airflow.
I just want to thread it around the back of the tray and through the top, so it should still be okay.

Thanks for the help. I can't wait to get all my stuff here and start working on all this biggrin.gif

Would it not be easier to just purchase cable extensions? They're quite cheap.
I like Modright's cables and NZXT sells nice ones as well.

instead of soldering into the middle, consider extending the end and adding a new pin. you will have to buy the tool (not exactly cheap) and the pins (way cheap), but you will end up with fewer solder joints to go cold.

if you are working with a modular psu, you could even build all new lines, just get plenty of wire and the male and female pins

Now that's a plan. Any idea on any places I could go to find the pins?

i picked up quite a few from frozencpu, but then found them even cheaper at a local electronics shop (about 1/3rd the price). although they are not too bad from places like frozencpu, those .25 pieces add up pretty quick if you are doing a whole psu. may want to look to local electronics places in your area

the crimper was about 25 through frozencpu. i couldnt find it any cheaper locally. the pins for the 24pin and similar are about .20 for 4 and the molex are .40 for four, so you can see how it would add up it you were doing a whole psu.

be sure to order a few extras because you will crush a few when you are learning to use the tool.

Sent out a couple of emails to local shops to see if anyone has some.
And are there any franchise stores that might have them? Because computer stores in my area seem scarce enough as it is and the one that I went to last night didn't have what I was looking for.

we have a placve called jb saunders. it is an electronics shop more than anything (think big independant radio shack that doesnt suck). i get quite a bit of my stuff there (resistors/leds/switches/wire/pins/etc). they dont carry much in the way of traditional pc parts, but they do carry all the parts to make your own pc boards/cables/etc. not sure if you have a place like that around you. definitely wont have any luck at your best buy/circuit city type places

No go. frown.gif Seems like the only way for me to get the pins would be to order them online.

And do I need the male pins in a modular PSU? I mean, I haven't completely taken apart all my cables yet, but the ones I have, they both have the square female end pins on both sides.
