GTX 580 owners, need a favor

Just wondering if any of you GTX 580 owners would like to do me a favor. For those who are running at 1080p/1200p I'm wondering if you could run Batttlefield 3 at these settings (below) and let me know what kind of VRAM usage you are getting on 32 or 64 player maps (especially on the more demanding maps). My GTX 570 is almost using all of the VRAM on average and I would like to upgrade.

All image quality settings on high
2x aa
16x af
HBAO off
motion blur off

When you play BF3 at the highest settings it pretty much 'uses' all your vram by default unless you really have a TON of it. However, it's really just reserving it, not actually 'using' it, and somethign like Afterburner doesn't know the difference.

So if you think you need to upgrade for the sole purpose of getting cards with more vram for this game, there's a very high likelihood ... you don't.

Yup.

If you are truly running into performance limitations due to insufficient video memory, you will notice hitching and stuttering (not necessarily sustained low FPS).

The GTX 570's 1.2GB should be enough even for Ultra textures at 1080P.

Not sure why you would choose a GTX 580 over a 7950, anyway. redface.gif

Hmm, well at those settings, high not ultra at 1200p when the vram is maxed I see big frame drops until it settles down. On avg I'll see 1090mb-1150mb usage and then get those random spikes on bigger servers to 1280mb and my fps take a nose dive.

I chose the GTX 580 over the 7950 because I would be buying it used...cheap upgrade. OC'ed they perform pretty close at my settings. No point for me to buy a 7950.

If that's the case and it's not a memory leak issue then you might indeed be constrained by insufficient video memory. You have more options than just an upgrade though.

Turn off the AA and use an SMAA injector; comparable image quality (I personally think SMAA looks better) with less of a video memory and performance hit.

Unless you're going used the GTX 580 is just a bad buy right now. I wouldn't spend more than $350 on one -- that 256MB of extra video memory isn't going to get you very far for long. I thought it was a great card when I owned one but it has no right commanding the prices it currently does when the 7950 and 7970 are out.

The 7950 will also overclock much better than the GTX 580 and absolutely destroy it when both are pushed to their respective limits. And it has 3GB video memory in its typical configuration.
