AMD disciple assembling new build, advice requested

Thread Starter
I have been a supporter of AMD for as long as I can remember. Now, I'm trying to put my first build together since 1997 (it's been awhile since I've had money to do this). Here is what I have set up for now. Due to a current deployment in Afghanistan, I will be utilizing the services of cyberpowerpc.com to assemble the rig...

Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-1 Full Tower Gaming Case W/ Side Panel Window

Neon Light Upgrade: 12in Liquid Neon Thunder Pattern Light (Red Color)

Extra Case Fan Upgrade: Maximum 120MM Color Case Cooling Fans for your selected case (Blue Color)

Noise Reduction Technology: Power Supply Gasket, Anti-Vibration Fan Mounts

CPU: AMD FX-8120 3.10 GHz Eight-Core AM3+ CPU 8MB L2 Cache & Turbo Core Technology

Cooling Fan: CyberPower Xtreme Hydro Liquid Cooling Kit 240MM w/ Dual Fan(CPU & GPU Liquid Cool Capable, Extreme Overclocking Performance + Extreme Slient at 18dBA)

Coolant for Cyberpower Xtreme Hydro Water Cooling Kits: High-Performance Coolant powered by Koolance (UV Green Color)

Motherboard: * [3-Way CrossFireX/SLI] GigaByte GA-990FXA-UD5 AMD 990FX Socket AM3+ ATX Mainboard w/ Ultra Durable™ 3, Dual Bios, On/Off USB Charge & 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, USB 3.0, SATA-III RAID, 5 Gen2 PCIe X16, 1 PCIe X1 & 1 PCI

Memory: 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (Corsair Vengeance)

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 2GB 16X PCIe Video Card

Power Supply Upgrade: * 850 Watts - Corsair CMPSU-850TXV2 80 Plus Power Supply - Quad SLI Ready

Hard Drive: 120GB Corsair Force GT Series SATA-III 6.0Gb/s SSD - 555MB/s Read & 515MB/s Write (Single Drive)

Optical Drive: Sony 24X Double Layer Dual Format DVD+-R/+-RW + CD-R/RW Drive (BLACK COLOR)

Extra Thermal Display: Aerocool Touch 1000 5.25" Touch Screen Fan Control

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit Edition)

Ultra Care Option: Ultra Enhanced Packaging Solution, CoolerMaster Thermal Fusion 400 Extreme Performance CPU - Thermal Compound Optimized for Thermal Dissipation, Professional Wiring for All WIRING Inside The System Chassis - Minimize Cable Exposure, Maximize Airflow in Your System

Also, I will be buying a second HDD separate (as this will help to reduce price) probably around 500 Mb to 1 Tb. This is going to be my ongoing project so I got an extra beefy power supply in order to accommodate future expansion. Any suggestions based on what you see above or prior experience? Any and all advice is welcome.

Well, my actual budget is around 2000, but I'm trying to keep it under 1800. This build at the moment is at about 1650 which leaves me comfortable room for a new monitor and extra HDD. I've been looking for somewhere where I can get the Phenom series processor, but as I need the company to actually assemble the rig it makes it a little difficult. Any suggestions? As much as I want to assemble this myself, I'm honestly not sure when if ever I'll have the free time to put everything together.
If $2000 is you budget then you should be doing way better than AMD!

Maybe socket 2011, or like suggested, a 2500k/2600k.

Also intel is planning to drop some brand new stuff pretty soon....... If you are planning on taking a while to get this rig together.

If you want I could suggest a $2000 rig build.

Hey man, I wouldnt trust any tower to make it over there in 1 piece. Honestly if your getting in for the ghan then just get a laptop. Hold off for a desktop till you get home.

aww dude..the new fx cpus thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
If you want to stay AMD..get all the amd stuff
..and a 960T zosma>1090T>1100T
and see what kind of cpus they bring to the table this year
tbh you can do a socket 2011 build with $2000
:thinking.gif: Gaming may not be your thing..or is it?
doh.gif and a gigabyte motherboard..
look to Asus for amd mobo whistle.gif

Yeah, gaming is definitely my thing. Thankfully, I'm getting this shipped to my home in Texas rather than here. For now, a $400 laptop I bought 3 years ago will get me through just fine here. It's hard moving away from AMD, I've been loyal to them for years but you may be right, it might be time to move. I'm right now working on a build using an Intel core to see what comes out. I'll repost here shortly with a new design for some more sharpshooting. Thanks for all the help! It'll be nice for a washed up gamer to get back into the field with a new project system.

Hey..don't discount AMD..here lemme show ya something..
this is a 5 ghz 2500k ...and a 4.3 ghz zosma..i had my videocard gimped on the amd run..and IDE selected cuz i like to run xp

338
Basically 1/10 point of difference..Maybe because of the 5 ghz thing..
But the AMD is much faster in day-to-day tasks
With the Intel chips..you click something..and it takes 10-20 seconds to pop up
with the AMD..It's about 1/2 second

WEI says AMD is better, must be true!
Id check your system. No modern processor, AMD or Intel, should take 10-20 seconds for "something" (makes it sound like ANYTHING? even a browser or word processing document?) to open.
