[PCPER]Upgrade your PS3 with an SSD... or just play on the PC. - Page 2

Anyone know what's a good ssd for ps3, in term of price, reliability and speed? Also, can PS3 utilize SATA 6GB/s?

I love the attitude on display this article.

Isn’t “not needing to do this” the whole reason for having a console?

It's a reason, and slapping an SSD in your PlayStation 3 still falls well within the "not needing to do this" category.
I'm pretty sure PS3 uses SATA I @ 1.5Gb/s just like the Xbox 360 considering how anything faster is not necessary for hard drives. If you think about it both consoles came with very little memory at the time they were released compared to PC's. Only 512mb total for both systems, so really they could use a "memory pak" boost like the N64 did. Too bad they don't have expandable memory.

Regardless, your argument doesn't make sense. Do you expect me to be gaming on an 8-year old PC with no upgrades to it? You can do that with a console, but not with a PC.

Yeah, it would help a lot, but there are good reasons why no one tries to do stuff like the N64 expansion pak anymore.  Having an add-on like that fragments your market and considering how much more it costs to make a game nowadays, there would probably be even fewer games that would've actually taken advantage of a 360 or PS3 memory upgrade than there were that used the N64's.  Publishers are so worried about making their money back in this generation that they would've likely just ignored it.

If I had purchased the same amount of games for both my PC and Xbox over the last 8 years, my three PCs along (with no games) have cost me around $5000, I've purchased two Xboxes in that time, one for $300, and another for $200. In that time I've had Xbox Live for 6 years ($300), and if we pretend that all console games always cost $10 more at release time than PC, and the fact that I own about 30 Xbox games, that's another $300. So all together Xbox vs PC is right about $1100 vs $5000.
Interesting article though, hope the next-gen consoles have at least 120GB SSDs, instead of 500GB hard drives.

I'm sorry but I've had an Xbox since launch, a PS3 for a couple years now and a Wii since around launch. Everything is more expensive on console, why do we have to pretend games are only 10$ more? Games are up to 40$ more when you consider steam sales. Even used games are more expensive. I have never seen a older used game for less than 20$, where on steam that game would be 2.50-5$ during a sale.

I remember buying all kinds of accessories for my Xbox 360 which included battery packs, charging cables, hard drives, xbox live costs. In fact the main reason I hardly ever play my Xbox anymore is because of how expensive everything is. Heck I even tried to watch Youtube the other day on my xbox and it wouldn't let me without a gold subscription.

Further, saying you don't need to upgrade a console is false too. Original Xbox's came with 20gb hard drives, some xbox's come with no hard drives at all. Fact is you need a decently sized hard drive to play a lot of games properly, and you can't play any downloadable games without a large hard drive. I don't need to quote prices here, everyone knows how ridiculously overpriced Xbox hard drives are.

If I had continued spending money and playing on my Xbox 360 all this time since launch, I have no doubt that my costs would be 2500$ or more.

BTW yes I have two Xbox's also, I regret every cent I invested into that platform.

I'm confused by the image. Are they saying that adding and SSD will improve the graphics and the framerate?

If so, that is a bunch of ramen noodles. I could see a framerate increase from time to time, due to loading, but improve graphics?
