Yeah I just googled it...wow...256MB for "system" memory and 256MB for VRAM...that is insane. I was expecting maybe 1GB or something, but 512MB? I know consoles need less hardware, but there has to be a line somewhere. I think it is amazing it can do what it does.

Now back to my question, what would be a good ssd for ps3 in term of price, reliability and speed? Nothing overkill, but not to be under-powered. biggrin.gif

Well first how much storage do you need? an older 60GB SSD would fit the bill nicely if you only needed to install games, which average around 6GB per install (since some games require installation).
How's this for an SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148447

Remember that the PS3 is the bottleneck here, so don't expect things to run much faster. Installs from discs would still be painfully slow given the blu-ray drive's horrible read speed of 2x playback speed (9MB/s).

Given the limited boost in performance for an older patch of Skyrim and it's similar level of performance to the Hybrid drive, I would say go for the hybrid drive since it offers 500GB of storage which you can use for hundreds of movies and whatnot. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591

Pretty much anything "pre-built" be it consoles, laptops, PC's are not gonna have the best HDD's in them unless YOU selected a good one from a build it yourself site.

I swapped out the HDD in my $300 emachine laptop and it made a world of difference.

That's because Laptop Drives are typically 5900 RPM which is SUPER SLOW!!!! An SSD, like the ones listed above would make a Laptop SUPER FAST!

I'll take quality over quantity any day of the week, thanks but no thanks...

Are those all SATA 6GB/s SSDs overkill for PS3? I'm thinking more of an Intel X-25M or intel 320 series 80GB would be nice.

Really any reasonably priced SSD should do. SATA III 6Gb/s is backwards compatible and as long as the drive is not known to suffer from issues with data corruption it should work.

Not quite true, but not quite false. A PS3 might have more titles from a bigger budget publisher, but Steam alone probably has more PC games available then likely was ever created for the PS3. However, the majority of them are indie games that a lot of people would not play even if they were free. So yeah, if you only count games that a Game Stop would stock on the shelves then a PS3 might have more games. It is a sad fact that many people overlook a lot of these indie games...though hopefully not many on this forum. Some of them are quite good.
