Tri SLI GTX 260?

Thread Starter
I'm waiting for Nvidia to release there next generation of cards before I decide to go with ATI or Nvidia but in the mean time I'm thinking about getting two more GTX 260s so I can go ahead and get two more monitors. So, my question is, what do y'all think about getting Tri GTX 260s to power my three monitors. Id like to use all three monitors to game on but i don't know if the cards will be able to push three 23" monitors at medium settings on BF3 and close to maxed out on SWTOR. btw, the cards combined will cost me $120-$150. and i would use the 3 cards in a spare computer to fold on once i decide on which next gen card to get.

I hope someone else here can correct me if im wrong but i thought sli would only support 2 monitors. i think that if you run it across all screens it will still display but only utilize 1 gpu. So with that said im guessing it would have less performance than you have now with a single card.

You only need 2 cards to run 3 display (at least on the GTX4xx series) and cant see them changing that since the GTX2xx series. If i were you i would rethink this. The GTX260 has 896mb om videoram, that will not be enough for 3 screen setup, at least not if you intend to play in 2D surround. My brother has a 3x1080p display setup and his GTX480 SLI rig can barley handle that, in example BF3 where he runs medium to get a acceptable framerate and the GTX480 almost got the double memory over the GTX260. Of course you can get two more cards but i think you would have to lower the settings in your games pretty drastically.

I'm planing to do the same as you, get 2 more 260 and build a tri-sli rig, but i only want do run on my 1680x1050 monitor and that would be fine.

In addition to the insufficient VRAM issue, another issue is your PCIE lanes layout of the motherboard (AsRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3).

It officially supports 3-way CrossfireX and SLI (for two single GPU cards) and Quad SLI (for two dual GPU cards). This means, only 2 Nvidia cards are meant to be run together, at least officially.  When running three cards, the mobo gives x8/x8/x4.  AMD is a little forgiving for the x4 and thus this mobo passes the AMD certification for Tri-fire but not the 3-way SLI (for three single GPU cards).

Even if you can somehow enable 3-way SLI, the x4 will take away some valuable performance of the trio.

So, because of this and the VRAM issue, I do not recommend going 3-way GTX260.

Thanks for all the input!
And thanks for pointing that out about my mobo. Might have to upgrade when and if i decided to Tri SLI/Crossfire in the future.
I will just grab another GTX260 if its cheap and just game one monitor till I get enough to SLI GTX 670 or Crossfire 7950

I'm about to fire up 3 way sli in my system. Not practical at all, but I think its cool and it will give my 580 a break for a few days. I only have a single 16x10 monitor though.

Before you do that, you could get GTX 295 used and sell your existing 260
