BulldozeD "free' upgrade plan -- that got me excited but left me with a migraine

2 week ago, I was loving my 2 year old intel Q9550 which was running at 4.01Ghz . I had pride of ownership. The thing was running on a custom water cooling on my 5 year old modified cooler master stacker.

But a plan dawned on me that I could upgrade without spending money. Well, I ended up spending $3 more but then again I wasn't able to sell my DFI lanparty p35 board because I accidentally bent 2 pins in the socket when I was removing my motherboard backplate for my cooling block. mad.gif

So i was able to sell my stuff for $300 on ebay.
Q9550 $180
Gskill pc2-8500 kit $60
kingston pc2-8500 kit $60
I couldn't selll

So I bought myself the following stuff for $303
FX-8120 $216
ASRock 970 extreme4 (990X chipset) FREE w/ the purchase of fx-8120 at microcenter
16g (4 x 4gb) Samsung low voltage dr3 1600mhz $87

Well, to cut the long story short...I'm running into too much trouble making my new parts stable.
In the end, the free upgrade plan (I actually spend $3) wasn't too good to be true because I settled for a 4.2ghz stable overclock because I don't want my vcore anything more than 1.425v.

don't worry about not going over a certain voltage, as long as your are under 55c @ load, and not trying to push anything extreme (ie. 1.6v) you'll be just fine and you shouldn't notice and reduction in life.

sell your RAMS on here..you won't get $60..but...err..you'll need 35 rep
Um..try raising your trfc to get stable
x-x-x-trfc
and umm..I don't think 970 Extreme4 is a 990fx chipset...
Yes..FX chips are a pain to get stable
I saw BSODS like never before! :lachen.gif:
poke.gif Too bad you didn't get an m4n98td-evo or 990fx Sabertooth and a 960T Zosma tongue.gif

I can post at 5.0ghz at 1.5375v. Anything above 4.40ghz is hard to stabilize without going vcore crazy. My temps are 52C@load at 4.2ghz.

I have a feeling that the press inflated our expectations on how well these babies overclock. The only review that I saw that was close to my experience in dealing with bulldozers is techreport's review. All the other major tech websites are giving unrealistic results or its just that I got a horrible chip.

4 years ago I was running my cedar-mill Celeron 5.0 ghz. I just expected more from this new 32nm fabrication.

lol just bc a cpu runs at 5ghz it doesnt mean it will be better than 4ghz now days, the speed of the cpu is very relative the 4-5-6-3 or w/e GHZ is only a number to represent an speed but you cant really compare the speed of cores on 1on1 between different cpus and not saying architectures.

The FX8120 can be overclocked to 5.0 I have seen it in a lot of ppl on this forums with screenshots and stuff, but you have to have good and high end parts, not sure how well is your motherboard for overclocking but I have seen best results on asus crosshair, sabertooth and gigabyte ud7 or ud5 at least, remember to always get the last version of the bios to avoid drops and get more stability.

The default speed of the fx8120 is 3.1ghz you can overclock it EASILY to 4.2 which is 1.1ghz more than his current speed on 8 cpu/cores, which In my head it looks pretty good, I have seen other ppl on this same board gets them to 5ghz tongue.gif

Huge difference kid between 5ghz "screenshots" and 5ghz prime stable which is near impossible.

Yeah, I took a chance on the asrock over the gigabyte ga-970a-ud3 (8+2 phase) but then again I don't think its the motherboard that's the one setting me back at 4.4ghz.

i remember the measure of a good overclocking motherboard was 2 things: First, how high its bus speed go and 2nd, How good the bios was. Pretty much every board from all the major manufacturer became even in terms of capability because same they had same chipsets. Then came the quest for cleaner power but in my experience that only allows you to squeeze a little bit more stability at the highest clocks.

In the end of the day, i feel my chip is simply not as good as my expectations were which I based off reviews, I felt that everyone with a decent board and good cooling should get 4.4ghz to 4.6ghz from the bulldozer.

I've used asus, gigabyte, dfi, abit, aopen, msi, epox, biostar and now my first asrock. in my 20 years of overclocking. I've used peltiers to refrigeration but I haven't tried LN2. But I've been overclocking my processors for exactly 20 years now. In fact, it was an AMD chip called386DX40. thumb.gif I'm also proud to be a member of the celeron 300A 600mhz club. thumb.gif

To get higher clocks you will have to push 1.5v. I had an FX-4100 that needed 1.5v for 4.6ghz and 1.6v for 4.8ghz. Temps were still pretty good with a direct contact heatpipe air cooler. Also, since you are on water, put a small fan directly on the VRM heatsink. I used the same board and w/o airflow in that area it became unstable under extended 100% load scenarios (at high clocks that is).
