AGP benching. Just can't find the right motherboard!!

Thread Starter
Heya mates biggrin.gif

I've found out that I've got a pretty nice dumpload of AGp cards ready to be overclocked. From a RIVA TNT to an FX6200, including a 7600GS, all the GeForce2,3,4 cards, and even some (!) Matrox boards, so I thought...

Why not overclock and benchmark this suckers to infinity and beyond? rolleyes.gif

So I started searching for hardware in the drawers of crap, and found something worthy of being put together in the best AGP benching system I can get together biggrin.gif

CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6400/Intel Core2Quad Q6600 G0 (the E6400 is readily available, the Q6600... I should ask for it, and I'm just lazy xD)
RAM: OCZ Gold XTC DDR2-800 CL4 (they reach 1000MHz on CL5 without too much of a hassle). Can use 1GB of generic Kingston crappy DDR-400 CL2'5 though.
Heatsinks: From an old Athlon XP aluminium gunk to a Thermaltake BigTyp, including a dual 2x240 radiator system (needs a waterblock though)

All I need now is a dang motherboard!

I know the AsRock 775Dual-VSTA can overclock a fair bit (300 FSB is attainable), and with a voltmod I might be able to reach the absolute max of the board. But the question is... Are 2.9GHz on an E6400 enough to bench on it? I'm used to bench at 4.2+ GHz, so not really used to this slowarse clockspeeds.

And before you ask, no, I cannot afford an E6750 EE.

All the VIA motherboards share this issue, which kinda bothers me.

I guess I could use a DDR motherboard, but will have a hard time finding adequate RAM for it.

Any suggestions? rolleyes.gif

Thankies in advance!

The ASrock boards are your best bet. Obviously an unlocked chip would be the ideal due to the limited FSB. I can't imagine there being a lot of competition with those cards so you may be fine with the E64/Q66.

The 775DUAL only takes Conroes and Preslers, and I don't think you can get the right bclk to be competitive against the guys running the better boards. My 775DUAL only does 310x8 with a E6750, and I can't get decent scores on anything. You will need one of the 4COREDUALs to run Kentsfields.

That's what I'm hoping redface.gif

Thanks smile.gif

@just_nuke_em: That was my fear. Kentsfield users really skyrocket their E8600s towards mid 4GHz, leaving us Conroers beating the dust >_<<br />

Edit: Holy jizz. There's full of QX9770 on the top of the charts. Even on RIVA TNT2 32MBs!!! mad.gif

Although there's a guy on a 3500+ San Diego and 512MB of RAM really tearing it up to the 3rd place!! At 2.8GHz O__O

I'm from Spain, so I can't really buy them reasonably priced from the States frown.gif ($30+ shipping costs)

But I've found a pearl on eBay, I'm on it at €23 shipped right now! (a 4COREDUAL-SATA2)

I should be able to hit 3GHz on the Q6600 (most certainly overvolting it), hopefully that'll suffice to squeeze some points smile.gif

Thanks to the involved thumb.gif

4CoreDual Sata2 is the premier board you should be considering for AGP overclocking, you can use a 4CoreDual VISTA as well but the VSTA is missing a few feature from the SATA2. You will not be able to overvolt the Kentsfield unless you hard mod the chip or BSEL pin mod it. None of the 775Dual or 4CoreDual boards have voltage controls. Also the best chips to use are the Yorkfield Extreme chips or dual Wolfedales, neither are officially supported but they do work, just have the FSB reduced to 266. An Yorkfield Extreme should be used if your AGP card can run 3dMark06 or newer, if the card won't run benches that can use multithread (Mark2001, Mark03, etc) you are better off with Wolfedales The Sata2 can reach 360+ but you may end up being GPU limited anyway before ever getting that high unless you are running one of the 'newer' AGP cards.

There are no better boards for overclocking AGP, at least my research hasn't found one, there are a couple of Asrock boards that run Phenom II but they don't keep up with the intel chips for the most part.

if you have any questions feel free to post them up

You can accomplish voltage increases using BSEL mods but the volt mod is much easier

Kentsfield are 65nm quads (Q6600 is one of them). They are basically two Conroe dice in one chip. The E8600 is a 45nm dual core Wolfdale smile.gif

The E5000 would be a good choice, as long as the board supports them. They are crippled Wolfdales that run on a 200 FSB meaning really big multipliers.
