I didn't like the campaign or multiplayer. It was just downright disappointing to me.
I kind of see what you mean... Only now it's the modern war theme that is overused and painful. And I'm wishing for more WWII games to break the monotony.

Personally, I've always liked the atmosphere of WWII. I find the older weapons and vehicles much more interesting, and prefer the setting (only the European Theatre though).
The SP element of WaW was a step down from Modern Warfare in terms of story, dialogue, voice acting and score (the whole soundtrack was rather absurd, apart from the SP menu track - quite a gem once it gets underway). But I reckon they're about equal when it comes to MP play. In fact, WaW possibly has a better map selection. For all the hype over Modern Warfare MP, many of the maps are actually very poor. I used to play a lot, and it got to the stage where I realised that 70% of my play time was spent grinding through the map rotation, waiting for one that was actually enjoyable and not just a spamfest/campfest by design.
