This game takes a lot
of commitment. If you gave up after an hour, that's your shortcoming, not the game's. I'll admit, I had trouble getting into Metro 2033. I found it stifling... almost claustrophobic at times. It felt like it was moving too slowly and I my most prominent thought was that they had taken 'realism' too far (the gas mask, jamming weapons, burdensome children on your back etc.). It didn't help that the PC I was trying to play it on was out of it's depth spec-wise. I played about 40%, then took a break feeling a little dispirited. A while later I re-started the game from the beginning, and this time I really started to appreciate it's incredibly rich atmosphere. I adapted to the slower paced gameplay and ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I think the sound design was especially well done, those Nosalis scared me half to death with their snarling - I don't like horror as a rule, but this was executed in such a way that I only became more deeply immersed instead of wanting to quit the game every 5 minutes. They balanced it nicely too, never leaving you on your own for too
long - companions always showed up just as my nerves were getting frayed.
I played it a second time, and enjoyed that too. The only reason I haven't played it since is because of some damned stutter issue that's been happening with it in my recent builds. Makes the game unplayable, and I can't seem to shake it.
