trying to fix a thrown laptop need a little help

Thread Starter
so i was given this laptop and at first it worked but the HD was just mushed up i pulled it and ran hd tune on it and 44% of the disk was useless i put it back and now it will turn on but nothing happens i might get a screen flash now and then but usually nothing so i was thinking it might be the cpu coz it was running 100% 24/7 coz it had tons of junk on it but idk if it is worth the HD cost to fix for myself or just find nice used one or refurb thanks guys

I would suggest finding a friend or a family member and asking if you could borrow a laptop hard drive from them. Either that or see if they have a spare one sitting around that you could borrow. Test it out, if it works, yay! Working computer. Just pick up a new/used hard drive and voila, working computer. If it doesn't work... come back on OCN and ask again. But take things step by step, hopefully it was the HDD and the computer will work fine with a working HDD.
That is what I would do, idk about other people though.

Download a set of bootable diagnostic tests and run tests on all the hardware. It sounds like it will need a new hard drive but the diagnostics will help determine if anything else was messed up too.

If it can boot into a linux cd or usb drive then it's the drive, and that's easy with the Ubuntu setup tool. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

Not true. You can often boot up but then have noticeable problems later. Seen tons of memory issues where the machine could boot fine but then started acting weird. In all honesty it's probably just the drive, but if the laptop has been thrown it cant hurt to check the other components.
